There is no reason to stay at Pompeii. It can be reached very easily by train form Naples, Sorrento (a pretty tourist town) or by ferry/train from Capri or Amalfi or Positano. Moving around to all those different hotels would be a pain.

Can't make specific recos since that is not our price point

Stay in either Naples or Sorrento for a visit to Pompeii - they are both 30 minutes away by train. Just pick the one that is more interesting to you for spending your afternoon/evenings (Sorrento is terrific at night).

Your budget is for a single room or a double?

I'd look into staying in a convent or monastery. The first two links below relate to Rome, the third to Sorrento.

That's a very low budget (only 50-75€), almost hostel prices. Is that for a single or double? I agree with picking one place (probably Sorrento unless you are really planning to spend much of your time in Naples).

There's a hostel in Positano in that price range. Private room with shared bath. It seems to have mixed reviews on TA.

This apartment in Sorrento is also in your price range.

You should also consider buying the 3 day Campania Arte Card Tutta la Regione for 27€. It will give you two free admissions (Pompeii and ?), discounts at other sites and a three day transport pass which covers the train/bus in the coast area.
