Seeking suggestions for a hotel in London (up to $250 a night) based on comfort and location.

That is up to about £170. Do you need a single, double, family room? £170 is generous for a single, and moderate for a double. How many nights?

But in any case there are hundreds and hundreds of hotels in London. Many hundreds are in good locations.

You say "location"..I suggest you tell US about the location in terms of proximity to what you want to do, how you prefer to get around, etc.

Your ideal 'location' might be a lot different than ours.

We love the Millenium Glouster. So convenient right across the street for Glouster Rd Tube station and 2 bus stops that connect to just about everywhere. Walking distance to V and A and Natural history museum, Harrods and great shopping. Lots of moderate places for eating nearby.The staff is very helpful and accomadating.We usually get a club room that includes a breakfast buffet and hors d'ouvres and free wine , and all day coffee and tea in a private lounge,also free wifi.

There are theatres all over London -- no one single theatre district. Plus anywhere in central London you will be a quick tube ride from just about any theatre.

What kind of $?

We recently stayed at Premier Inn - Holborn on Red Lion Street. This hotel is no frills but very good size, comfortable, clean, quiet, helpful and friendly staff, great breakfast and good price.

It's a few minutes walk to Holborn station which is a stop along the Central and Picadilly lines on the tube (subway). The Picadilly line goes straight to Heathrow too if you're coming from there.

Yes, theatre is everywhere, but this hotel is only a 15-20 minute walk to Leicester Square/Covent Garden or the "West End" which has tons of theatre/restaurants/nightlife. You can also walk to numerous other sites. I understand there is also a Premier Inn right in Covent Garden; we opted against it since we didn't want to stay in a crowded/noisy area and the tube stop was exit only over the summer. Good luck!

For theater I would definitely head for Covent Garden or nearby. But then I'm used to a city and city noises don't bother me - it's those damn birds chirping before dawn that drive me mad in the suburbs.

To me Gloucester Rd is way too far form the center. Got stuck there on my first visit to London - just showing that people have very different ideas of central. We usually do central areas (Covent Garden, Mayfair, Park Lane, Piccadilly). Knightsbridge is as far out as we go.

Anywhere along the Central Line between Gloucester Rd and Russell SQ is VERY central and VERY convenient to Heathow and other parts of London and most theatres.

To say that Gloucester Rd and/or South Kensington is too far west is just not realistic. I know you like Mayfair/Park Lane/Knightsbridge - but there are few if any budget accommodations so many people are priced out of the area. Plus they are only 2 tube stops/less than 5 minutes 'closer in'.

Thought I said I was stuck near the Gloucester Rd station my first trip to London almost 40 years ago. (May in fact have been the same hotel mentioned - it was a real dump - at least then.)

To me it was just too far.

But then I live in Manhattan and expect to be able to walk to a lot of things and just 2 or 3 subway stops to many others.

And there are some moderate hotels in this area, although agree you may not find any really budget places.

In September, I stayed at the Strand Palace, in a single room, and loved the location and the room. Very near Covent Garden and theaters. Maybe take a look.

I have stayed at the STRAND three times and will probably stay again in June. Love the location and they cater to singles. I have also stayed at several other central London hotels, but in my view this is tops for convenience and price.
