Hotel Squarcialupi in Castellina in Chianti-Anyone know it?

We are considering staying here near the end of March. Is it a good location for visiting Florence and San Gimignano? Are there any great restaurants in the town? Are the rooms pleasant and clean? The exterior (from photos) looks a little spartan and depressing. Is the email address at tuscany.net going through an agency? If it is, does anyone know the direct address for best rates?

"Is it a good location for visiting Florence and San Gimignano?"

Absolutely!

"Are there any great restaurants in the town?"

No. Just ordinary ones.

"Are the rooms pleasant and clean?"

Absolutely! The place has a very unique, rustic charm. Rooms are spacious and the entire hotel is well-done homey.

"The exterior (from photos) looks a little spartan and depressing."

Never judge a book by its cover.

Would you make a trip to Poggibonsi or elsewhere for dinner or would it be too difficult to find way back in dark?

I haven't stayed there yet, however, based on reviews and recommendations will be staying there on March 30th---perhaps I'll see you there!

I never stayed here. I just checked it out and photographed a few rooms.

I dined at every famous restaurant within an hour's drive of Castellina in Chianti and drove wonderfully intoxicated and in the dark (I don't recommend this). I was the only car on the road and, yes, I have gotten lost. It was so much fun.

I love to drive and I have little fear. I also have a good sense of direction (even intoxicated) and no problem driving in complete darkness (which is what you'll find in most parts of Tuscany).

Now I am intrigued. What and where was the famous restaurant? Was it worth the drive?

I can't uderstand who posted that Castellina only has ordinary restaurants, at walking distance from your hotel is the world famous Albergaccio restaurant listed as one of the top 10 in Italy! and also the Gallopapa is highly rated.

Thank you, sabina, for pointing out my oversight. I forgot about the Albergaccio which is about a ten minute walk from Squarcialupi. It wouldn't go on my top ten list but you can certainly dine well here.

Also, my e-mail address for Hotel Squarcialupi is outdated. Their new address is indeed <[email protected]>.

My boyfriend and stayed at Squarcialupi this summer and absolutely loved it! i agree it looks depressing from the photo on the web but that's just the front of the hotel - the back looks like all the other photos of tuscany (rolling hills, flowers, etc). My friend is going this summer with her boyfriend and I told her she should stay there for sure. We only had dinner in Castellina one night and ate at La Torre right in town. It was delicious, though our waiter was really rude.
You'll be in a great location, don't worry. Very close to all the towns you'll want to visit.
We asked for a Junior Suite (or whatever the slighly more expensive room was) and were glad we did b/c our window opened to the back of the hotel with great views of the countryside.
have fun!
