I realize that hotel rooms are small in most european locations. Considering that my wife, 7yr-old daughter and myself will be in Rome for a few days, can anyone give insight into whether it's worth taking a triple room instead of a double room. My understanding is that most hotels won't offer a double if travelling with a child. Is there any truth to this?

Given the fact that a European double is smaller than an American double, you may want to consider getting a triple. Many European hotels will allow you to put a cot into a double room, though. I know that Casa Howard in Rome allows the cot; I also know that the Hotel San Carlo in Rome offers doubles, triples, and quads. You may need to investigate this on a "hotel by hotel" basis.

It's definitely worth taking a triple room. You do want to have three bed spaces, don't you? A few places might offer a rollaway if booked in advance, but I think for the most part you'll be stuck with needing a triple room and that's what you'd be charged for in any event. One child under 4 is often allowed free if they use the existing bedding (in other words either scrunch in with the adults or sleep on the floor).

Thanks BC and WT. Judging from the many pix of guestrooms, the double beds are typically full size (or two twins joined together). In any event, neither is conducive to accommodating us three comfortably. I'll seek out triple room accommodations. Hopefully Hotel Alimandi is available, although at 180Euros ($217)per nite for a triple, it is more than what I budgeted. Any recommendations in the $150 range (Sept timeframe)? I'd prefer to stay between the Vatican and Trevi areas.

Hi there - We recently stayed in a room that had a second level with a small twin bed in Rome. It was at the Argentina Residenza. The service wasn't terribly friendly, but the room was nice and in a great location. We paid E167/night in the high season. Check out this link and look at the Friends/Business Room:

Found your HM trip report to be extremely insightful. I particularly found your digital photo paragraph to be an invaluable nugget of information. Was searching the market for a decent storage device for the numereous pix I intend to take. Didn't realize the iPod can store pix as well; more reason to buy one after all.
Since my wife would like to spend a couple nights in Amalfi area on the way to Rome, your report is quite handy in that regard as well. Is parking an issue in Positano?
