Hotel or hostel near Prado Museum?
Trying to find a nice hotel or hostel near the Prado for $100 U.S. or under.
Can anyone recommend one or more?? Going there in May.
Appreciate your help.

I stayed across the street from Museo del Prado at Hotel Mora, $50/pp double room back in May 1999. At the time, I considered Hotel Mora was a real find and recommended it many times on this forum. Last year, Maribel (Spain Expert) noted that, while Hotel Mora is in fact a real value for price, location, and cleanliness, the neighborhood up a few blocks (towards Atocha) has gotten seedy. I still recommended, just try to stay away from that area (as you exit the hotel, avoid going to the right). If you take a left exiting the hotel, you are about 10-15 walk to Plaza Mayor, about 3-5 minutes walk to Prado. Another street to avoid in Madrid at night? Calle de la Montera: plenty of hostels in that street, however, after 9pm is filled with prostitutes, transvestites, and drug dealers. Your call, but I would avoid it.

Some years ago we stay at Hotel Principado in back of the guarded Cortez building which gave us extra security and very quiet. Not far from the Prado and right next door a good restaurant with menu of the day offering. Also not far from Zarzuella theatre as I remember.

I also stayed in Suecia for a night in Oct. It's not bad -- but is probably more than $100. I think that I paid about 100 Euros in October (1 night).
Supposedly it's a four-star hotel, but parts are not renovated, or maybe that's why the price is low. It's written up by Maribel.

P.S. I took the cab from Atocha, and the driver had no idea how to get to Hotel Suecia. Finally I had to navigate and find it. (We just got out of the cab.)
With all the time spent, if I had had a good map, it was probably faster (not to mention, cheaper) for us to walk from Atocha station. The hotel is very close to Thyssen/Prado.
