The Latin Quarter has some jazz clubs. I have been to Caveau de la Huchette and Caveau des Oubliettes, which are very close to each other in the 5th arrondissement. Any hotel in the Latin Quarter or the closer parts of the 6th arrondissement would be close enough to walk home at night.

Can you tell me what kind of Jazz tCaveau de la Huchette and des Oubillettes have? My fiance loves Stan Kenton. Is there diner and a show? Is the area relatively safe at night to and from. I'm staying nearby on St. Germaine. Thanks

Caveau des Oubliettes has something different every night. Not the kind of place for dinner and a show. I can't find the schedule I had used, but one night is a jam session (Monday, if I remember), one night blues (Friday?), different nights fusion, organic, bebop, funk, something like that. The crowd there, at least when I went, skewed fairly young. The basement in which it is located becomes very packed and you can't be sure of getting a seat. They don't open the doors until shortly before the show, so getting there early does not ensure a table or a seat.

Caveau de la Huchette has lots of people dancing, frequently to swing music. Also not a place for dinner and a show. They have a web site (in French) with a schedule:

http://www.caveaudelahuchette.fr/index2.html

The area both clubs are in is very safe, lively at all hours, plenty of people on the street.

Hi U,

From my trip report:

...on Rue Benoit is Le Jazz Club, where Swing style jazz is the order of the day. Marcelle Zanini (clarinet and vocal) and Ahmed Gülbay (piano) gave us an enjoyable presentation of old and not so old standards and a few original pieces - very enjoyable. 6E cover charge + 1 drink 28E for two.

It still being early (there were people on the streets), we walked up the street to Le Bilboquet for something entirely different. Hidegarde Wanzlawe, accompanied by a jazz combo, gave a lively performance of American and French songs. Her Eastern European accent (in both English and French) added a delightful layer to her scat singing.

Bobby Edwards, a local fellow with a great talent on the bass sax, sat in for a set of "Cherokee". The whole group swang and the crowd went wild. No cover charge. 36 E for one drink each.

Rue des Lombards (Metro: Chatelet) in the First Arrondissement has three major jazz clubs next to each other. It's a wall-to-wall bistros/bars kind of a street in the heart of Les Chatelets: Duc des Lombards (nr. 42), Baiser Sale (salty kiss) in nr. 58, Sunset/Sunside in nr. 60. Most music starts at 10PM.

For what it's worth, here's a list I found on the ParisBestLodge site. Don't know if it's 100% up-to-date or not!
Paris's Jazz clubs

From rue des halles, walk down rue de la Ferronerie and make a right on rue Saint-Denis and another right rue des Lombards. Cuban, African, Antillean music featured together with modern jazz and funk in a welcoming and mellow space. Month-long African music festival (month varies). Concerts start at 10pm, music until 3am (typically 3 sets). Cover 6-18euros, depending on performers : mainly new talents. Free monday jam sessions at 9h30pm with 1 drink minimum. Beer 4 euros, cocktails 9 euros. happy hour 5-8 pm. Bar and club open daily 5pm-6am. AmEX/MC/V.

Le Petit Opportun : 15, rue des Lavandières-SteOpportune, 1er. 01.42.36.01.36. Metro : Châtelet.

Some of the best modern jazz around, including Americans. Cover 13-16 euros depending on act. Drinks 5-9 euros. open August-June Tuesdazy-saturday 9pm-5am. Music begins between 9h30 and 10h30 pm.

Café Universel : 267, rue Saint-Jacques, 6eme. 01.43.25.74.20. Metro : Luxembourg.
Walk up rue Soufflot and turn right onto rue Saint-Jacques. A very studented, very Latin Quarter hangout with free and easy jazz, and an emphasis on vocals. Concerts at 9h30pm. No cover. Bar open Monday-Saturday 9pm-2am. MC/V.

Les Sept Lézards : 10, rue des Rosiers, 4ème. 01 48 87 08 97. Metro : Saint-Paul.

L'Eustache : 37, rue Berger, 1er. 01.40.26.23.20. Metro : Châtelet-Les Halles.

I think the Marais or area around Chatelet metro is really the best for jazz clubs, then maybe St Germain. I wouldn't recommend the Latin Qtr myself.
