Thanks for that information regarding the close proximity of the airport to the center of Florence. We will be attending a cooking school at a Tuscan villa with just a day in Florence during that week. Now I'm really open to places to stay in "downtown" Florence.

MJT: are you going to Good Tastes of Tuscany? If you are staying there, they will certainly get you to the airport if you would like. Also, if that's your cooking school, I'm certain they will help you with any transfers or reservations you might need to stay in Florence.
I'm curious about which cooking school you're going to. I used to do some writing for the GTT people, and can tell you that they are terrific.

Staying in Florence is likely the easiest.
But if you should, in the end, decide you want to stay near the airport, here is the address of a VERY chic little B&B a few minutes by car from the airport:
It is called Casa Valiversi. The owner had an antiques business in Florence. Her house, on the edge of Sesto Fiorentino, is a converted pharmaceutical factory, now a palace of hip luxury. It's like a little peek into the world of Architectural Digest.
She does a great breakfast and is, moreover, an extremely attentive and obliging hostess:
She led us in her car to a nearby restaurant, so we should not get lost on our way to dinner. She also led us to the airport in the morning, to ensure we did not get lost on our way to our early flight.
I emailed when we got home and I'm glad I did, as she responded: "Non le nascostero' che sono rimasta preoccupata..."
IE "I won't conceal from you that I was worried" (lest we miss our flight)

Yes...stay in Firenze any place you like...no need to huddle close to the airport in Peretola...
I am guessing your flight out of Firenze is early in the AM..I have caught a taxi from the central historical district to Peretola in about 10-15 mins. the thing is THAT early in the morning there is virtually NO traffic on the streets headed to the airport and the cabbie can zoom right on over easily.
