Richard, Try the following URL:

http://www.room-service.co.uk/ITALY-BROCH/lorelei.html

The site has pictures. We stayed here in our early travel years. If you can get a balcony room, the views of the Bay of Naples during the day and Naples at night are awesome. The furnishings were simple, but certainly adequate and the rooms were ensuite. At the time, it was half-board. The meals were good and sometimes very good. The views, again, from the dinning terrace are just spectacular. We reserved a cliff-side table the first afternoon by speaking to and providing the waiter with a good tip and that became our table for all meals till we left. It was a wonderful and very romantic experience.

I've never stayed there but I can tell you the hotel is conveniently located within easy walking distance of the bus and train station in Sorrento and Piazza Tasso, in the center of town.

Stayed at the Lorelei in May 2001 and thought it was a great deal for the money. (Cheap!) Very centrally located...about 5 minutes to center of town and also about 5 minutes to the train station. Great views of the bay from some of the rooms and the outdoor restaurant too.

Despite how picturesque it is (as you can probably tell from the pictures), it is a little ragged (maybe even a lot!) around the edges, and the young woman at the front desk wasn't rude, just wasn't friendly at all.

All in all, I would definitely stay there again, as cost, location and character are high on my list.

Buona Fortuna!

I had to chuckle, JB, we encountered that same young, thin, dark-haired little grouch too. We considered it a challenge to make her give us a civil answer, then on the day we left she smiled and said good-bye, nice having you here! All the visitors who read this thread should confound her with friendliness.

I agree absolutely. I had a very nice stay there, and some of the staff were exceptionally nice and friendly, but there was that one young woman (smoked like a chimney, right?) who was a little curt. If she only knew how people remember such things, and how they get passed on through word of mouth.

I stayed there in 2000 and found it a great value. It is a bit threadbare, but the view is incredible, the location close without being in the middle of all the tourists and the room was very clean. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to have the experience of the Sorrento's location even though you may not have the big budget.

Yes, Nancy and Sam, it sounds like you did meet my friend! (Your descriptions were both right on!) I was friendly, smiled and spoke italiano to her every day to no avail, but at least I was able to talk her into giving us some of those great postcards they have there!

The rest of the wait staff are lovely though, the older couple were very friendly. I wonder if it is family owned/run. The two waiters (brothers) are very agreeable and are there every year. I love that hotel!

Richard,
A couple of other suggestions that are very central, though I have stayed in neither.
Hotel Astoria, there is a review on Fodor's hotel section. No website that I could ever find.
Palazzo Starace, a B&B, has a website and looks fine. (We have booked in here so I hope it's good!)
Both look central, clean and budget priced.
Kay
