I would like a hotel (possibly on a canal) within a five minute walk to St. Mark's Square. I would like to pay $200 MAX. I will be in Venice in mid August with my ten year old granddaughter. I've stayed several times and am looking for a new adventure!

Convenient to both St Mark's and Rialto but on a very quiet side street, w/ a dock, full breakfast included and on site wine bar with free appetizers at 'happy hour'. Some rooms at least should be w/i your budget

The term "walk" can be interpreted in so many different SPEEDS. Didn't you know that? It's almost as flexible a term as is "charming."

That is possibly the worst place to stay in all of Venice, but if it suits you, go for it. And yes, "within 5 minutes' walk" probably doesn't take into account the millions of tourists, many of them with toddlers and baby carriages and wheelchairs and whatnot trying to steer their way through shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Mid-August you are looking at absolute madness.

But for what it's worth we stayed 6 nights at the Ca'del Nobile (more like a 10-minute walk to San Marco) in December for just over 100€ a night and it was lovely - until we walked outside and hit the crowds.

Try the Locanda Orseolo - tucked away in a quiet area very close to St. Mark's square. It might be more than your budget but they have a lovely breakfast, great air conditioning and a wonderful staff.

i appreciate that this is NOT what you asked, [and I'll probably get flamed for answering in this way, but what the hell,] but as you've been to Venice several times, and probably experienced all that San Marco has to offer, and you are travelling with a 10 year old, why not stay up by Giardino where there is a playground and room for her to run around?

There are also likely to be far fewer tourists.

you would also be able to hop over to the Lido for the beach, and to get the vaporetto to travel around, [and you'll probably get a seat too!] but have a much more relaxed time.

Really I would leave staying in San Marco till a less busy time of year.

Thank you so much for your advice and suggestions. I booked the Locanda Orseolo. My granddaughter and I will have been in London for a month....staying at the Egerton House Hotel....and wanted to finish our stay in Venice as she wanted to go on a gondola.

rickyloo, I am so glad you took my suggestion. The staff gave us excellent suggestions for restaurants, out of the way places to visit, etc. I don't know how long you plan to stay, but we really enjoyed our visit to Burano island.

Be sure to visit St. Mark's square at night when the orchestras are playing. Early in the morning is lovely, too, before it gets crowded. We almost had the entire square to ourselves one morning.

annhig, I also love the Giardini area. I stay at the monastery next to the garden.
They actually have a playground in their courtyard.

Saraho - we discovered it when we were coming back on the vaporetto from Burano once; it seemed as if we'd discovered where "normal" Venetians live. I haven't stayed there but if I were visiting Venice with a young/ish child, I would definitely consider it.

for rickyloo...excellent choice...you will love the hotel...location and the people who run it are so nice. You are lucky they were available...very popular....we tried but they were full for our stay this time. enjoy.
