Hotel in Salerno?
Looking for a nice one, will have just dropped MIL & SIL off at the Rome airport.
We will be taking the bus to Amalfi, just can't face that drive.
Need this one quick, we leave in the morning,
Thanks, Newt ( who will be sitting on the inside side of the bus)

Many years ago used the JOLLY HOTEL in
Salerno. The Jolly is a large chain thruout Italy and other locations. Found their hotels always good in service and with decent dining rooms.

I stayed at the Hotel Plaza in Salerno last year. It is conveniently located across (5-7 mins walk) from the Salerno train station and bus terminals and is a 3* property that included breakfast in its daily rate. You could call them for rates (011-39-089-224477). You can't beat the location, esp if you will be taking a bus in the morning. (Just wondering why you would go further south to Salerno since you need to take the bus to Amalfi? If coming from Rome, wouldn't it be easier to stay overnight in Sorrento? The SITA busses run frequently from the Circumvesuviana Station in Sorrento to Amalfi -- I took several when I was there 1 week ago)

Hotel Plaza is across the street from the Salerno train station, from where buses to Amalfi depart. The hotel is a 30 second walk fromt the station. It is a 3-star, and some rooms have a/c. It's a bit dreary, but adequate of an overnight.
The Jolly Hotel, which is much better, is clear across town, 30 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi.
If your destination is Amalfi, you should get off the train in Salerno, not Naples or Sorrento.

Thanks for the help, we will have a car,
but I don't want to drive the Amalfi coast. Thats it, end of discussion. I am willing to take a bus, thats why we thought staying in Salerno might be a reasonable option.
Huitres, how often did those busses run and how long was the ride to Amalfi.
We were hoping fro something a little more charming than by the train station...
This is an uxpected last second addition to our trip,
Thanks, Newt

newt: the Jolly Hotel in Salerno is nice and across town from the train station. They typically have an excellent buffet breakfast (included in the price of the room). You can even walk to the station w/o luggage (but it's a long walk along the seaside promenade). I've done the walk myself.
SITA buses to Amalfi run every 60 miutes or less. A good place to catch the bus is from the train station (where most people board). Fare is under 2 Euros one way. Purchase ticket from newsstand inside the station. Schedules at
www.sita-on-line.it
Campania
Quadro 15
I don't believe it's possible to board the bus much closer to the Jolly Hotel, but the hotel concierge will be able to verify for you.
If you want to sleep by the station, the Hotel Plaza is your best bet. Done it myself. No regrets.

Hi newt: Looks like you got the Hotel Plaza info twice. Indeed it is across from the train station; however, it took us about 5 minutes with lugging our luggage and all! It was a nice hotel and very convenient to everything. We walked across from there catch a bus to Pompeii and also another day a bus to Paestum. I would stay there again if I was returning to Salerno.
Ok, here is the exact schedule of the SITA busses from Sorrento to Amalfi, you can refer to www.sita-on-line.it schedule for any changes in times, info, etc. There are frequent bus departures from Sorrento to Amalfi in the morning: 6:25am, 8:25am, 8:50am, 9:15am, 10:05am, 10:30am, 11:00am, 11:30am, 12:20pm, etc. The journey takes ~1.5 hours. The SITA busses are blue and the stop for the one to Amalfi is on the L corner as you are walking up to the Circumvesuviana station from Sorrento's town.
Likewise, you might consider taking a train in from Rome's Fiumincino Airport (the Leonardo Express goes directly into Rome's Termini Station), then take a train down to Naples (less than 2 hours), and transfer to the Circumvesuviana line in the Naples station for Sorrento. There are departures every 15-30 minutes for Sorrento. While the train(s) option sounds complicated and lengthy, it is easy to do and might even be better than a bus. It is a matter of preference.
Further options might be to just go with a bus company in Rome that drives directly down to Amalfi. I have heard of those companies/hired car services, expect the ride to be about 3+hours.
In regards to your hotel question, if you decide on the Sorrento option, there are numerous hotels near and around the Circumvesuviana train station where you could spend the night before going on to Amalfi. If you plan to leave your car, you could do so at a parking garage in Sorrento as well. Another idea might be to take a boat from Sorrento to Amalfi - that way you get the scenic route from the ocean looking up at the AC coastline. Just some ideas....Buon viaggio!

Bus travel time to Salerno-Amalfi is 70 minutes. There is also ferry boat service in 30 minutes from the Concordia and the Manfredi dock. Manfredi is close to the Jolly Hotel (convenient if staying there). Concordia is close to the train station.
Fare is 4 Euros one way. Schedules at

Newt-Where's the trip report? I am coming from Calabria by train and want to spend one night on Amalfi coast. We have five people with luggage and two are continuing to Capri and three on to Rome the next day. Where could we stay for one night to break up the trip back to Rome and to make it convenient for all with train and ferry connections. Do we stay in Salerno or take the ferry to Amalfi or Positano and stay one night? Any ideas?
