Has anyone stayed at a good hotel in Naphlion?

It's outside of town, but the Amalia, tho a chain, is nice. (Spring for one of the better rooms away from the groups.) It's been five years since we were there, perhaps something nice has been resurrected right in town.

Byron,

I stayed at the Amalia last October. It 5 minutes out of town but very nice. I don't recall seeing any along the way that looked better. Maybe I wasn't really looking. But the Amalia is nice!

Sue

Elef... the Palace was getting a lot of negative reviews awhile back. Has someone taken it over and shaped it up?
if so, would be my first choice.

the nafplia palace used to be the former Xenia palace a state owned and operated hotel.

since 2000,helios group -wich manages the 5 star and 5 diam.AA elounda bay and beach hotels, -has refurbished revamped the hotel wich...according to the
'wallpaper' lifestyle magazine is the absolute reference for hotel design and the best example of the 70's design and architect.

it is expensive but great .the fusion restaurant is outstanding and...nafplio is a gem of a town! you will love it!

Thank you all for your replies. Much appreciated. Helps me out alot. The Palace "looks great" and is "expensive" as per their web site.

I've stayed at the Ilion Suites (twice) and the Nafsimedon, both of which are small, friendly places in neoclassical buidlings in the heart of town, and a lot cheaper than the Xenia, Amalia. I would recommend the Ilion, and go for one of the small apartments with balcony if possible.

for more info:

www.i-escape.com/ilionsuites.php

or drop me a mail if you want - I know the Peloponnese inside out (I'm currently writing a guide book on it)

I've been twice. Stayed in town, and the Amalia. I preferred the Amalia, yes, even though it is a chain!!! Amazing, huh? Beautiful garden setting, peaceful, smaller hotel for a 'chain', nice pool by garden. If you are visiting other locations with water views, the Amalia wouldn't be so aweful. The town and harbor is nice, but most people go there as a base for the sites in the area.
I liked the Byron Hotel, another small modernized, neo-classical, family run hotel in the heart of the charming Old Town.

Too small to have a pool, 24 hr room service, that sort of thing. But reasonably quiet, right in the middle of things, and breakfast was served on a nice terrace overlooking the old town.

Cost was approx $80 per night, in August 2000.

I have stayed in tolon a few times - 7km from Nafplion on a long sandy beach. It makes a good base for a family / sun lovers and the accomodation is reasonable. From Tolon it is easy to get to Nafplion. Lots of good hotels, including the Paradise Lost Apartments and the Hotel Tolon.
In Nafplion - the Byron would be my choice.
Carolina
