Hotel in Montmartre

Hi!!!
My boyfriend and I are going to Paris and we will be using car. I have booked a hotel in Montmartre in Rue de Blanche but I don't know what to do, because I have been browsing and a lot of people say Montmartre is not a good area. Would you recommend a hotel in Montmartre or would you stay away from there?
Thank you so much.

Montmarte is a bit away from most of what you'll want to see - if you're near a Metro stop, you can get anywhere easily, so it's less an issue. The area around Pigalle is a bit seedy - but other areas are OK.

Montmartre is not a bad area. I think the point many here make is that it may not be best for a FIRST trip to Paris.

BTW, when are you planning to be in Paris and what is your nightly hotel budget?

Montmarte in on the right bank and most of what you will want to see is on the left bank on near the Seine. There is a "red light district" near/in Montmarte although I have no information for you so check your map and guide book and see where your hotel is located. You will not need a car in Paris. You will totally regret trying to drive in Paris when the metro is so easy to use.

I agree, I would dump the car idea unless there is some compelling reason to have it and only use one if you are planning to leave the city. Parking is expensive and often inconvenient. A car a liability, a drag to deal with and a signficant unnecessary expense.

Montmartre is a very interesting part of Paris with a real "village feel" to it, but as others have mentioned, it borders on some areas that many would consider to be a bit dicey. I've stayed in Montmartre and enjoyed it, but that is in the context of visiting Paris many times. I don't generally recommend it to first-time visitors as a place to base from for a Paris visit because it is a bit out-of-the-way for many popular sites that most first-time visitors want to spend some time with. It's true that you can take the metro to get anywhere that you want to go, but there are areas closer to the Seine on either side which would afford a lot of things within walking distance and much more in the way of "connected-ness" with more of the city.

I have driven to Paris, but there is absolutely no need to drive in Paris with the terrific metro and bus system. And anyway, on-street parking is dreadful, if you can even find anywhere to leave your car.

I parked in an underground carpark close to my hotel in the Latin Quarter, and collected it when I left Paris three days later. The cost was around 50 euros (July 2005), which I though was quite reasonable. The carpark was secure, and no damage to my car either!

I asked the hotel to suggest a safe carpark nearby, which they did, but if you google paris car parking or something like that, there are various websites with plenty of information.

Have a great trip.
