Hotel Hoffmeister - Prague

Can anyone tell me about this hotel. We will be in Prague in December with a rental car and this hotel has parking. Is it in a good area ? Anyone stayed here ?

Yes, we stayed there in 2003. Don't know whether it is still true, but at that time it was the only hotel in the Czech Republic in the Relais and Chateau association. Typical of hotels in that association, it is very nice with a high standard of service. At least at that time, it had a more continental, modern decor than I was expecting. Not Czech, cute, romantic, but very nice. Our double room was fairly small but nicely appointed with a fine bathroom, tub and shower if I recall correctly. It is conveniently located for driving into and out of Prague, but not really distant from the main part of the city. It's near the base of the steps up to Castle Hill, in the Mala Strana area, across the river from the old city center. It's in an area one bridge up from the Charles Bridge and close to a metro station. We found it to be quite well located for sightseeing in Prague. They had fantastic breakfasts, with a varied buffet of cheeses, sausages, and even herring, plus the usual egg, cereal, etc. stuff. Their dining room, while not remarkable was very nice and the one meal we ate there was just fine. If prices aren't sky high by now, it's a very good value for a smallish hotel with some luxury in Prague. I can recommend it.

Reading the reviews on tripadvisor.com they suggest the hotel has perhaps seen better days and could use some updating. It's still highly regarded though. We are driving and parking was my top priority. But in saying that I'm concerned about the location. Is it a decent area at night, if we walked to the old part of the city and then back afterwards is this a good area as you recall ?

No personal experience but saw this hotel many times from the tram I was taking along the winding road bewteen the Castle (hill) area and Malostranska Tram/Metro stop. Nothing much in the immediate area of the hotel. Perhaps there is no tram stop either, you will have to walk down to Malostranska, it seems. It is a bit of inconvenience if you are on foot. Hotel itself seems nice (thought it was 4* but actually its site says 5*) with good reviews and I do understand if you are with car, it would actually be an good choice.

It is an uphill road to the hotel from Malostranska, that might be a slight pain and especially at night but still doable...

Yes, it's very doable. We did it each night we were in Prague (5) and had no problems. It's reasonably well lighted, though a quiet area, and the incline is doable as well--not steep, just mildly uphill.
