Check out Casa Leone on
http://www.casa-leone.com/
We stayed in the upstairs room that has a large veranda overlooking the harbor. Antonio the manager is very helpful and a delight.

I stayed at the Kydon in Sept., only a few streets from the old Venetian town and harbor. Also there is the Minoa. I tried to book Casa DelFina right on the old Venetian Harbor 3 months in advance, but it is so popular, couldn't get a room.

Sorry don't know naything about cooking classes in Chania. We only used a taxi driver from the airport to the hotel. I'm sure that at whatever hotel you stay at, they will be able to recommend a driver for you. We considered staying at the Casa Delfino which is very lovely and gets great reviews. Decided to save a considerable amount of $$$ and thus chose Casa Leone. Also be aware that during the season, we found that many of the hotels have required stays which are longer than 2 days. Enjoy your trip--Chania is a charming town.

My wife and I have stayed twice at the Casa Delfino, which is one of the most legendary hostelries in Chania. It's close to the west side of the harbor, but up some small side streets so you aren't exposed to the noise of the promenade right along the harbor itself. Here's the website:

Chania is such a fantastic place. Try to do the hike through the Samaria Gorge, if it's open when you're there, and visit the beaches at Elafonisi on the southwest tip of Crete, and perhaps Phalasarna.

We stayed at Palazzo di Pietro in July and thought it was the best hotel we had during our two-week trip to Greece. The only problem is that I think your stay won't be long enough to book there, but give it a try anyway. The rooms, service, and location are outstanding!

I stayed at the Amphora on the harbor last Sept. The room was charming with lots of lights and large windows facing the harbor. Had a very nice balcony outside my door. Breakfast was great. Also stayed at Ammos, about a 10 minute cab ride from the harbor. It was right on the beach with a pool. Hotel was recently remodeled and very beautiful; staff was extremely helpful and patient with all our questions.
