Margo,

I was in Hania about 3 years ago and thought it was charming. There's a part of the older town that has narrow winding streets wide enough only for pedestrians. Regarding hotels - I looked at several there - the best by far was the Casa Delfino - beautiful rooms nicely decorated with marble bathrooms and very helpful staff. It was reasonably priced (I think I paid around $65 then - but again this was 3 years ) and it is in the heart of the older downtown area (a 1 minute walk to the harbor) yet the immediate location is quiet.

Have fun!

We spent a week in Chania last november and loved it. Stayed at the Casa Delfino which we enjoyed very much. We often stay at Ritz/Four Seasons type hotels so I think this is a pretty good recomendation. We had a two bedroom suite with two bathrooms including a jacuzzi bath for E150/night which wa perfect for a family of four. They do have a web site. Staff was very helpful and the breakfast very nice.
The town has an old city section with a harbor that is fun to explore. You can eat quite decently for about $20/couple if you stay away from the harbor side and avoid seafood which is quite expensive in Crete.
Renting a car and driving around the island is easy but it is a large island.
The beaches are better on the other side of the island. A very nice place to visit.

The beaches are fine. Almost everywhere has a "town" beach; Personally I'd rather be out of town a bit and, for ease of access to Chania, suggest you try the Akrotiri- Kolymbari beach is pleasant, as is tiny Tersanas, and at Stavros the beach is in a big sort of lagoon, just below Zorba's mountain from the film

The beach in Stavros is gorgeous. Highly recommended! There's a town beach a little outside Chania which is okay too if you don't fancy travelling. If you get a chance don't miss the Samaria Gorge - it's fantastic.

Hi Margo - I lives there for 6 months many years ago- check also the spelling Xania (pronounced Hania) it is beautiful- once a fishing village and still an active community -- my most cherished memories are the evenings, people gathering for food and drink and just walking in a large circle -- delicious food, fish and veggies -- beautiful water!
