I forgot the best part of being on the island! If you get up early in the morning, you can walk to San Marco, and there will not be a person in sight! It is a beautiful place to be as the sun lights up the city! I am a really budget traveler, but in Venice, I would pay a little more for a little less just to be there the whole time. I hope you love Venice as much as my husband I do.

I really hate to add to your confusion but at $80 a night, the Excelsior is a no-brainer!!! We stayed last summer at the Regina (which was amazing - but 3x's more than your rate) and spent every day at the Excelsior pool (as a guest at a Westin resort, you have access to all the Westin properties in Venice) and then we'd go back into town late in the afternoon for sightseeing and shopping. If you want to have the luxury of both a "beach resort" vacation and Venice combined - the Excelsior fits the bill. Enjoy - either way, you will have a great time.

Danak - the shuttles run from pretty early in the morning to about midnight. For a definitive answer, you can email the hotel and they will get right back to you. They will also be able to tell you that if you desire to remain in Venice proper after midnight, what would be the best way to come back to the Lido. From our experience, we were never really out past midnight - and that was with having dinner and going to some opera/classical music performances. For more descriptions of our time in venice, see my trip report.

Danak -
THis is a dilemma - although either way, you'll have a wonderful time.
I've been to Venice many times and stayed at the Excelsior once. It is a beautiful hotel. I still remember waking in the middle of the night and looking out over the sea, with the moon on the water - and beautiful breakfasts overlooking the sea.
On the other hand, if you've never been to Venice before, there is definitely something to be said for being on the mainland.
If luxury is important, then I'd say the Excelsior. I've had friends stay at the American and liked it very much [don't hesitate to ask what rooms are available and see them all before making a choice - when you check in]/
Have a wonderful time whatever you choose...

great trip report jodalahh. My husband went backpacking thru europe and visited Venice for 1 whole day bec. he hated it. Hopefully he'll have a different experience this time. If we both don't like it, we can always sit by the pool
