Hi
I had this comment in my Paris file from April 2000 this message board (as s. said, you can search for more comments if you like)--
April 2000:
Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, "on Cardinal Lemoine in the 5th - under 600ff for a double - lots of charm, old townhouses around a courtyard garden, close to the always-entertaining Rue Mouffetard." Travel and Leisure Magazine also recommended the Grandes Ecoles-- 51 rooms, said to be much larger than average for the price. The 1998 Knopf guide called this an 'exceptional' hotel in a garden setting.
I haven't stayed there but the info in my "Cheap Sleeps..." book indicated that the hotel has an elevator and hair dryers, but no tvs. ??

I have a file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me. No charge.

It was also one of the 22 under $100-a-night hotels recommended by National Geographic Traveler March 2001. That article was the catalyst for us making reservations there for our May trip.
It's very popular, so if you're interested, I suggest you contact them ASAP.
Email: [email protected]
Website: http://www.hotel-grandes-ecoles.com
They start taking reservations four months out.

We stayed at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles two years ago and will be back later this month for a week. We loved it. The location is great: on a quiet side street just a block from the Metro (Cardinal Lemoine), within easy walking distance of lots of restaurants and sites.

No TVs in the rooms, but that didn't bother us -- we were hardly ever in our room, except to sleep (and the bed was quite comfortable). Our room was a fairly good size (for Paris), with a nice bathroom and even a balcony.

We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel, so I can't comment on that. But there are several great bakeries and cafes right in the neighborhood, if you opt out of the hotel's meal.

Do you have more specific questions?

Michael, I have passed this hotel many times when in Paris and it looks charming- like being in the country. A friend of mine stayed there with her elderly mother and said while they loved the hotel, the street it's located on has a steep incline and her mom had a hard time walking up to the hotel.

Rue Mouffetard is a 3 minute walk and
has about 50 rest./cafe's to eat and drink. The whole area is very nice
and trust me you won't have any problem finding a bakery/pub/cafe, etc. The hotel is an 8-10 minute walk from Notre Dame. Have fun.

Laurie,

There are no mini-bars in the rooms. You'll find several convenience-type stores within easy walking distance, but I don't know whether they'd sell ice. If you really need ice, you might be able to request it from the hotel, since they do serve breakfast and have a kitchen.
