There have been many [mostly favorable] comments on this hotel -- do a search for ecoles and you'll get plenty to read

Hi
I had this comment in my Paris file from April 2000 this message board (as s. said, you can search for more comments if you like)--
April 2000:
Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, "on Cardinal Lemoine in the 5th - under 600ff for a double - lots of charm, old townhouses around a courtyard garden, close to the always-entertaining Rue Mouffetard." Travel and Leisure Magazine also recommended the Grandes Ecoles-- 51 rooms, said to be much larger than average for the price. The 1998 Knopf guide called this an 'exceptional' hotel in a garden setting.
I haven't stayed there but the info in my "Cheap Sleeps..." book indicated that the hotel has an elevator and hair dryers, but no tvs. ??

I have a file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me. No charge.

It was also one of the 22 under $100-a-night hotels recommended by National Geographic Traveler March 2001. That article was the catalyst for us making reservations there for our May trip.
It's very popular, so if you're interested, I suggest you contact them ASAP.
Email: [email protected]
Website: http://www.hotel-grandes-ecoles.com
They start taking reservations four months out.

We stayed at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles two years ago and will be back later this month for a week. We loved it. The location is great: on a quiet side street just a block from the Metro (Cardinal Lemoine), within easy walking distance of lots of restaurants and sites.

No TVs in the rooms, but that didn't bother us -- we were hardly ever in our room, except to sleep (and the bed was quite comfortable). Our room was a fairly good size (for Paris), with a nice bathroom and even a balcony.

We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel, so I can't comment on that. But there are several great bakeries and cafes right in the neighborhood, if you opt out of the hotel's meal.

Do you have more specific questions?

Two of my friends were there on September 11th, and said that the owners were wonderful and that the hotel was wonderful. We plan to stay there in June.

We planned on staying there this coming June until I found out they had no air conditioner and we didn't want to risk a heat wave in Paris without AC. If it was another month (except July, August), we'll definitely stay there! Good Luck.

Michael, I have passed this hotel many times when in Paris and it looks charming- like being in the country. A friend of mine stayed there with her elderly mother and said while they loved the hotel, the street it's located on has a steep incline and her mom had a hard time walking up to the hotel.

Does anyone know if the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles has a mini bar in the room? Or, is there somewhere nearby where we can get ice? Are there shops and restaurants close? Thanks for your help. Laurie

Rue Mouffetard is a 3 minute walk and
has about 50 rest./cafe's to eat and drink. The whole area is very nice
and trust me you won't have any problem finding a bakery/pub/cafe, etc. The hotel is an 8-10 minute walk from Notre Dame. Have fun.

Laurie,

There are no mini-bars in the rooms. You'll find several convenience-type stores within easy walking distance, but I don't know whether they'd sell ice. If you really need ice, you might be able to request it from the hotel, since they do serve breakfast and have a kitchen.

Thanks for your replies Chris and Jane. We are traveling with teenagers who like to keep a few things on ice in the room. But in Paris, I guess we will do as the Parisians do. Maybe they can just get a coke from a local market. Thanks again! Laurie
