Hotel advice in Munich

I have read many of the other posts and am a little confused about what part of Munich would be best. There will be four of us as I have two children. Any recommendation on location and hotel?

Despite having no clue as to your budget, transportation preferences, activity preferences, length of stay, or details of any other wild hairs or desires you hope to satisfy, here are my thoughts.

Lehel district.. Hotel Splendid Dollman
Nymphenburg and the Laimer Hoff

Thank you for the reply. Here's more info -- we will be staying two nights, have a rental car (although we like to use the subway) and will hope to see the main attractions which I believe are in the center city.

Sharon, I'd like to suggest that you pick up/drop off the rental car before/after your Munich visit. Driving and parking are difficult in the city. Most hotels will not have parking availability. Public transportation is great.

With the family and the car I would recommend the Hotel Uhland. They have different size rooms to accomodate your needs, they have a few parking places in the back of the building and they are close to the U-Bahn station that serves the Octoberfest grounds. If you choose to walk thye are about 10 minutes from the main train station and a little further to the pedestrian zone at Karls Tor.

OK...I'm ready for the rash of "that's a stupid thing to worry about" responses BUT

WHAT time of year?

is A/C an issue (yes, it DOES get muggy in the Summer in Munich)

SharonC:

We stayed at the Mercure Hotel Muenchen City in May. It is about a block or two from the Marienplatz, so it was very convenient. We did not want to stay near the train station, because it it not as nice area as near the Marienplatz area (from what we had read on the forums and what we saw).

But the Mercure hotel is still within walking distance to train station when we needed to go there. There is a subway station in the Marienplatz area, but we walked EVERYWHERE. We only took subway 2x, once when we went to Dachau and other time when we went to train station to take a tour of Munich, We also took the off/on bus around Munich.
I would highly recommend the Mercure Hotel, it was real nice. The one drawback was that they charge 13E for breakfast; which we did NOT eat. There is a cafe across the street which was alot cheaper.

The hotel is on Senefelderstrasse 9, because I think there may be another one with similar name in Munich. It did cost a little more, I think it was 111E a night.

Hope this helps.

I was going to suggest the Hotel Laimerhof as well, but it doesn't have AC. It does have parking and is easy in and out from the highways though. The neighborhood is nice and walkable, plus it is a 5 minute walk to the tram that takes you downtown. We saw quite a few families with kids when we were there.

Hi S,

I also recommend the Uhland. www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html

I suggest that you call or write them regarding AC and fans in the rooms.

Will be 4 of us in Munich during July. Have booked at Dorint Sofital. Next to the Rail Station with AC and it's new. It looked very nice. I think with 2 young children can book suit with extra bed as i was told during my call. Though i have booked two suits which comes with breakfast. You can check their web, probably you will like the design and their spa...

Just to update and further ADVICE if possible. I have now updated to return the car to Kurfuerstenstr. 101 which is nearer to Grand Hyatt Hotel. Since we will be staying in Berlin from13/7 to 19/7. Then 19/7 to 23 will be staying in Dresden. Does it worth or make sense to keep the car till end of Dresden 23 July. Parking the Car at Hyatt is at least 20 euro. It is OK if I will be using the car. Or should I stick to my booking and return the Car at Berlin and use the public transport. I would prefer to retun the car in Berlin mostly due to traffic and I also I like to feel free to drink when I like. I do know this is personal choice but you probably have the experience to suggest your view.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion/comments.
