Hop on Hop off bus

"We took a Hop on Hop Off Bus via the Green Lines which was a great way to see all of Rome and then decide which areas we wanted to spend time in. This bus was a great way to save our feet for the rest of the trip. "

DOES THIS NEED TO BE BOOKED AHEAD OF TIME? We would like to do that our first day in Rome.

I was just in Rome in June and we did this with a regular city bus. We just hopped on and cruised through the city. It was a great way to see parts of Rome that we would not have otherwise seen and very inexpensive! Quite an adventure! This was our second trip to Rome and we will soon be back!

Robbie - No, you don't have to book in advance. Just turn up and go.

There are several companies which offer hop-on hop-off tours besides Greenline. Others are 110, CSR, Ciao Roma, Archeobus ...

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. Alternatively, Rome bus & metro passes cost:

€ 4.00 One day (BIG)
€ 11.00 Three day (BTI)
€ 16.00 One week (CIS)

atac 110 bus. Is it reliable and not too busy in mid-May?

Steve James;

Other than the length of the pass, is there any other difference between the various Rome Bus & Metro passes available (i.e. BIG, BTI, & CIS)?

Similarly to the Carte Orange in Paris, are these passes good for certain days of the week; or are they good for the specified # of days, once activated.

Sorry for all the questions, but this return trip I'd like to utilize the bus/metro system and reduce our reliance on the cabs.

Thank you.

Delvino - No difference except duration. For details go to the ATAC website and click on BIG, BTI, CIS.

Hope this helps ...

P.S. Forgot to say ...

Yes - they are good for the specified # of days, once activated. They MUST be validated on the first use.

Just noticed the info on the 3-day ticket (BTI) is not given on the English version.
Here it is in Italian:

Steve

P.S. MZ - The 110 is as reliable as any of them.

Here's something I'm wondering about in regard to the tourist hop on hop off bus versus the regular city bus. Would it not be worth the extra money to pay for the tourist hop on bus, with the thoughts of the pickpockets/gypsies not using these as much due to the extra cost involved? I hear of stories of pickpockets on the public buses all the time, so it seems by trying to save a few dollars you take a larger risk of losing much more in the process.

PP - I don't think the hop-on/ hop-off buses are worth the cost personally. A 3-day or 7-day pass is much better value for money.

Re. pick pockets - these are most active on the infamous No 64.

The answer to this problem is very simple:
- Don't keep money in your pockets
- Don't catch a crowded bus - wait for the next one where you can get a seat.
