Catacombs in Rome
We will be in Rome in March. I am fascinated with the history of the catacombs, unfortunately the tours I have looked at are the wrong days and times.
Does anyone have advice how to do this on my own. I would need to use publis transport.PJ

The cheapest way is just to get a Rome bus pass (a day-pass costs Euro 3.00 appr.). That way you can do it at your own speed.

Alternatively there is the ARCHEOBUS Tour which costs Euro 7.75. Here's a link:

http://www.miracleplayers.org/visitingrome/archeobus_rome.htm

or go to

www.romavision.it
and click on 'Archeobus' for the current timetable.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

The main catacomb area can be reached by bus 218, from outside the baptistry of St John Lateran, across the road. There are many buses to the Lateran, eg 87 from Corso Rinascimento, next to Piazza Navona, and 117 minibus from Piazza del Populo.
The Catacomb of San Callisto is well signposted - there can be no mistake as to where to get off the bus 218, and there are signs to S Sebastiano (perhaps 500 yards along the Via Sette Chiese) and S Domitilla, about 150 yards in the opposite direction.
Bus 218 will return you to right outside the Baptistry. These three catacombs close one different weekday each, & for about 2 hours at lunchtime. There is usually a short wait (no more than 15 minutes) for an English-speaking guide.
www.catacombe.roma.it/ gives information about S Callixtus.
Also at Sant'Agnese, northeast of Termini, by bus 36 or 84 from Termini, care for closing day/lunchhour.
