4 days are very very few. As others have told you, you should decide which part of Tuscany interest you more. If you are interested the florentine Chianti area you should set in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Greve in Chianti or Barberino. Obviously you won't visit Florence having just 4 days, there is not enough time to understand anything of it and it will be completely wasted time.
Colle Val D'Elsa would be right to visit San Gimignano, Siena and other towns in the senese province.
For the Maremma area I would suggest the medieval Massa Marittima, but there are so many interesting villages there.
Or you could set in Lucca, or Arezzo.

Gottino - it sounds like you might be able to help me too! We are going to spend a week in southern Tuscany with our 2 teenagers so are looking for a place to stay with a pool. Do you recommend any in the areas around Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza? We might consider staying in a small town, or being close to one. I'm overwhelmed with all the choices! Any help is appreciated.

Hi Bob - I saw that one yesterday and it's to die for! When I started my research I had a hard time finding anything, but now that I've gotten going, I'm just overwhelmed! I do think I'm in the right area for us though and have managed to plan a week by cutting out a few other things. I'm open to other suggestions on agriturismos and base towns if you think of anything for me!
Biggest hurdle yet to come - getting frequent flyer seats on the dates we want. I needed to be sure my plan would work out, know exactly how long to stay and which dates and have to be ready to call 331 days in advance! Then I can book a few places and relax and read at my leisure for the next year. Wish me luck and thanks for your suggestion.

www.villazuccari.com/index_eng.php While it's on the Umbria, Tuscany bordor, many towns can be reached in either location. Richard

kwren - I just went through the same ordeal for FF tickets. I wanted Delta and checked daily on line. When dates became available online did not match up with what Delta reps told me by phone. Since Delta doesn't do one way tix (unless you want to use RT mileage), I had to wait until my return trip date was available before booking the entire trip. As I said, I checked every day and ultimately did get what I wanted. Good luck and persevere!

Mike ~ Bob and others suggested Terre di Nano, which is where we ended up booking for this October. We booked one of the aprtments as there will be 3 of us, but the rooms also look just lovely. Besides the beautiful accomodations, I liked the location, the fact that you could walk to dinner in Monticchiello, or they will cook for you.
Some of my notes copied from other threads relating to our future stay at Terre di Nano ~
We took morning walks to Montechiello and Montepulciano, the former, (1.5 and 3 miles) walking over mostly unpaved, quiet roads (hiking shoes strongly recommended). The views are breath taking.
If you choose to visit Terre di Nano, be sure to dine at the small restaurant called La Porta in Monticchiello. It offers excellent food, wine, views, and particularly lovely sunset dining, as the restaurant faces west (La Porta is a 4-5 minute drive or 15-20 minute walk on a country lane from Terre di Nano).
in Montechiello there is another restaurant called Taverna di Moranda up from the gate where La Porta is located. Great food and wonderful wines. Never been to La Porta so can't compare it but my friends in Montalcino who told me about it say it is better than La Porta.
We had dinner cooked for us on the property the first night, and it was one of the best meals we had in Tuscany
The location was ideal, as Montepulciano was our favoritie town.
A couple of recommendations (from Christina) for dinner in Montepulciano: La Grotta and Aquacheta. Both are fabulous!
Terre di Nano also produces their own wine which I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend a tour of the winery by Georgio.
Have fun!
