Been to Britain. No problems there. Are there any countries in Europe in which the standard thumb-up hitchhiking gesture is offensive? In the Near East it was an obscene gesture and I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. Are there any places (esp. in Italy, remote France, Greece, Spain) where hitchhiking is not feasible (i.e. lack of traffic, immoral, illegal, etc.)?
