Hip/Funky Amsterdam hotel

Looking for a so-called "hip/funky" amsterdam either in or close to the heart of the action.

Any suggestions from you fodorite hipsters?

Not sure what this request means. I stayed at Hotel Holland, which had mold on the bathroom ceiling..that was pretty funky. (but def not hip).
Are you looking for a place that allows 'smoking'?... or are you referring to decor?..Have you looked on www.channels.nl at the hotel reviews?

dougie~ like Travelnut above I'm not certain exactly what you're after. I stayed at Hotel Kap which was pretty darn funky and fairly cheap with a good breakfast but also not particularly hip. hotspotsamsterdam.nl was very helpful (or maybe it's amsterdamhotspots)

dougieo,

You might want to check out the popular book HIP HOTELS, which is a series of the "funkiest" hotels all over the world. I'm sure Amsterdam is covered. (These hotels tend to be on the pricier side, be warned.)

I think this thread is suffering from confusion over 2 meanings of the word "funky", which I was confused by in a previous thread.

Dougieo & Bettyo70 are using the word to mean hip or trendy.

Travelnut & Suze know the word as meaning grotty or even actually dirty - a usage I hadn't come across BF (Before Fodors). I assume this meaning is just used in part of the US, is it ?

Bettyo70's suggestion of the 'Hip Hotels' series is a good one.

Well, I know dougieo isn't looking for "funky" as in dirty - but I'm not sure if he means decor/appearance/furnishings, or if he means attitude/clientele/atmosphere, which may or may not be mutually inclusive.

I suppose it doesn't matter anyway, as I am not in the least hip/funky, in any sense of the term....but it is fun to research things...

Yes it is www.amsterdamhotspots.nl with good hotel listings by price category.

Maybe www.hotelarena.nl is what you have in mind?

Or how about OCCII which is located in a former squat?!

Let's Go Amsterdam is a good guidebook for a first time trip with a hip and funky leaning.

When it comes to Amsterdam, first, last and always check out channels.nl. You will find exactly what you are looking for.

I agree that if it is funky in a good or not so good sense, it will BE somewhere in Amsterdam.

In terms of "hip" I rather doubt there is any agreement as to what THAT oh so 1960's term really means.

I have no experience regarding Amsterdam, but in general a helpful site for locating funky hotels is:
