These farms (Bauernhöfe) offer Zimmer Frei in quiet, beautiful surroundings. Breitnau is just next door to Hinterzarten -

According to German Rail service (WWW.bahn.de), there is bus service between the two towns. It takes twelve minutes.

I should have asked about transportation. Personally, if traveling by train, I would stick to in-town accommodations. In this case I would go to the Hinterzarten website (www.hinterzarten.de) - search thru all the inexpensive Zimmer Frei listed - write down several. I would then search for any possible websites of those listed accommodations, such as these, all in Hinterzarten -

Ferienhaus Bürg (http://www.ferienhaus-buerg.de/)
Gästehaus Eckert (http://kurt.eckert.bei.t-online.de/)
Gästehaus Evelyn (http://www.gaestehaus-evelyn.de/index_frames.html)
Gästehaus Ketterer (http://www.gaestehaus-ketterer.de/)
Gästehaus Klingele (http://www.pension-klingele.de/)
Landhaus Rombach (http://www.landhausrombach.de/english/engstart.htm)

Another solution is to ask at the Tourist Information Office in whatever town you wish to stay (usually at or around the train station) - for accommodations in your price range. They will generally provide alot of assistance - calling to see if room is available - giving directions, etc.

Ben-

thanks so much, that is really helpful. I had looked at that website but had trouble navigating the german and ended up with a list of 100's of zimmer. Your list looks much more ot the point and I will check them out and hopefully find something suitable for my friend.

Thanks againg,
Kevin

Kevin, we stayed at Gastehaus Klingele 3 years ago and can thoroughly recommend it. It is family run, the daughter speaks fluent English so language problems. We had a room at the back of the house overlooking the garden with its own private balcony, delightful, brekfast was great and plentiful. The house is only a few minutes walk into the centre of the town. Hope this helps.
