My wife and I have done four trips to Europe for hiking. We have done Switzerland, France, Italy and Scotland.

We are looking for suggestions for our next trip. Any suggestions for a Country and Location (city/village)?

France - Especially southern France has a neat system of GR marked walking paths - les Sentiers de Grande Randonee

To me southern France is amongst the most beautiful natural areas in Europe and what's nice is that you can always stop by an out of the way village cafe - but paths vary in degrees of difficulty - like those in Alps and Pyrenees. Weather can be hot in summer of course.

Michelin 1:2000000 maps indicate the GRs on their maps I believe but I'd get more detailed maps as mentioned in links.

Britain. Hundreds of places for fantastic hikes, in mountains, hills, moors, dales along rivers, the coast, from pub to pub.

There are long distance footpaths in the Netherlands if you fancy something different. You can walk the length of the country, follow the coast, some are cross border, or you can continue on into Germany or Belgium. They use the same maring system as for instance the GR in France.

I would also add the Pyrenees, both sides of the border.

I'd second England and Wales - especially in Snowdonia area as prime walks - Cotswolds is perhaps most famous. Public Footpaths are a centuries-old tradition so you can traipse thru private areas too. But yes Pootpaths link any two pubs - I get about 15 miles to the gallon only though!

Kent is great too - especially historic Pilgrim's Walk to Canterbury: http://www.pilgrimswaycanterbury.org/.

Of course Spain's pilgrimage footpaths to Santiago is legendary if well-beaten.

Germany's Black Forest is great and Bavarian Alps - especially along Austrian border. Fussen area I found good.

Do you like hills, flat, countryside or in towns

I cycle the C2C across the UK (up near the English Scottish border) you can walk it search C2C for advice, a fair mixture of landscape.

National Park Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland - bizarre sandstone rock formations, paddle steamers in the Elbe river canyon and boat trips in smaller canyons, castles, birthplace of free climbing, cycling trips, "Painters Trail" and far more than 1000 km of hiking trails, one of the main places where writers and musicians of the Romantic Era got their inspiration.

Bad Schandau is probably the best base if you want a small town. For smaller and picturesque choose Kurort Rathen.

Slovenia. The Julian Alps

Dolomite Mountains and South Tyrol. I would go back in a second if I could.
I traveled in many places and hiked many mountains, but Dolomites are first on my list.
You can stay at rifugios, very good food and comfortable.
