Hi from London

We arrived at London Gatwick this morning. It was slow to get to our hotel--the Park Lane Sheraton. The people at the airport, the hotel and downtown were subdued, shocked and somber but very nice. Businesses, restaurants and theaters closed early in the afternoon to clear people off the streets. The hotel slipped a notice under our door advising us of the lack of transportation downtown for the rest of today but predicted business as usual tomorrow.

It is raining anyway so we are staying in the room tonight and resting.

Lots of police, ambulance and heavily armed police on the streets. Great attitude of people we've encountered.

Cindy

Well, I cerainly hope you have a good time in London tomorrow. Please don't stay in your room all night. By all means, go down to the bar and have a large pink gin. It will make you feel better.

Cindy,

One of the things I was surprised to discover on the long walk home today was how close to each other all the big tourist sites are, and how much you can see on the routes between them. St Pauls to Harrods via Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace was particularly nice. So the lack of public transport shouldn't spoil your holiday (it might even enhance it), and Londoners will be very determined not to let these attacks disrupt everyday life.

Hope you have a great holiday.

Hi Cindy,

Glad to know that you were not in harm's way.

Thanks for checking in with us!

Does as TG says, pour some gin, toast each other, and the good people of London.

Welcome to London, Cindy. I hope you'll be able to enjoy your stay to the fullest despite the terrorist nightmare we have experienced here today.

Thanks for posting!

Cindy, thanks for checking in. Glad to see that Kavey is doing well and so is Ben Haines (as I saw on another thread).

I wonder how David West is doing? I haven't seen him on Fodor's in a while. Hope he's ok.

Thin, please pass the pink gin!

Beatchick, I believe that David West checked in early this morning on the thread that got pulled.

I am not 100% sure, but I think that he did.

David West posted quite a few times on the thread that was pulled. He was at his office, not sure how he would get home as I recall, but definitely he was safe.

Word to the terrorists - what a miserable lot of killers you are. Low of the low. London, take care ... we are thinking about you and you are in our prayers.
