Here is my Germany/Swiss problem..

We are going to Switzerland and Germany next week (need urgent reply!). We are winding our way up to Rothenburg and spending the night on Saturday, April 8th. We fly out of Zurich on April 11th. We would like to do a cable car into the mountains - how do we get from Rothenburg to a cable car destinatin and then to Zurich by the 11th. Please don't suggest changing our reservations as they have already been confirmed. Any help would be appreciated!

Are you driving or going by train?

Maybe if we had an idea of your entire itinerary we could more easily come up with some suggestions.

If you stay in Weggis, near Luzern, there's a cog train down the road in Vitznau that goes up to Mt Rigi -- you can get to Vitznau from Weggis by boat, take the Cog to Rigi, then take the Cable car back from Rigi to Weggis.

Luzern is just an hour or so train ride to Zurich.

There is a cablecar to the top of the Zugspitz from Ehrwald in Austria or the Eibsee, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany. Either one is close to your route to Zürich if you are driving. http://www.zugspitze.com/ehrwalderalmbahn/de/

Unfortunately we are going by train. I'm wondering if it is doable to travel Rothenburg to Zurich (6 hours) on 4/9 (Sunday. We would then stay overnight in Zurich. Then we would take the train from Zurich to Engleberg (2 hours) to take the cable car to Mt. Titlis? Of course we would have to take the train back to Zurich the same day (another 2 hours) as our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (4/11). Is this possible? Am I missing something closer or easier? Also, are all the problems resolved with the massive floods that Switzerland had in the fall? Thank you again for your help.

I didn't see a link to the Zugspitz website that translates to English? Am I missing it? Thanks!

Personally, I think Titlis is perfect for you. It's a wonderful cable car ride up. It's doable in one day. The Rigi and the Pilatus would be closer but I'd still opt for Titlis because of its cable car.

Trains aren't a problem in Switzerland. I'm taking one tomorrow to go skiing in Sedrun for the weekend.
