Help with Trip to Bavaria

Tentative Christmas Plans, family of 4 ( 2 teen girls) 13-14 nights.

Itinerary:
Nurnberg-4 nights Dec 19-23 with day trips
to Bamberg, Rothenburg.
Munich-5 nights Dec 23-28 with day trips
to perhaps Salzberg, Garmisch,or
Fussen.
Strasbourg-4 nights Dec 28-Jan 1 with day
trip to Colmar or Nancy. Would
love to train to Paris.
Return home via Stuttgart.

Questions/Comments: Only experience in Europe was 18 night trip Italy, Venice, Lucca, Pienza, Rome. We loved it all and wonder how this trip to Germany might compare?

December: How miserably cold might one expect, we are Florida gals. Am somewhat concerned we may be forced to spend much of the time indoors.

Train travel:We rented a car for part of our trip in Italy, for Tuscany, and rode the trains elsewhere. We are always on a budget and understand we can train in Bavaria for 27 Euros/Family each day. Do you have experience training to some of the smaller towns, between Nurnberg and Munich that we would like to visit?

Cheap Eats? Is this possible in Germany?
We rented apts in Italy and shopped locally at the Coops, but this trip would be hotels. Don't know what to expect for feeding a family of 4.

Have lots more questions, will post later.
Any helpful comments about trip would be appreciated.
Thanks!

If you haven't book a hotel in Munich yet, I'd recommend the Hotel Uhland. Lots of Fodorites recommended it to us, and our family of four loved it there. Nice large family room, nice breakfast buffet, beautiful old mansion, great service, in a nice neighborhood with some restaurants. It's about a 10 minute walk to the train station.

We walked to the train station and used the very inexpensive Bayern pass to take two day-trips, one to Fussen and one to Salzburg. Both were great.

It's just my opinion, but if you haven't been to Paris, I'd cut back on the long stays in Bavaria, and take the train to Paris for 3 nights, instead.

I think this sounds like a great trip. Nurenberg of course will be crowded this time of year, but is a great place to see the Christmas market.

The weather is going to be cold, but not unreasonably cold. Make sure you take scarves, gloves, warm footwear, etc.

Traveling by train is easy, but not always convenient to the smaller cities. For instance, you will have to change trains at least twice to go to Rothenburg. Same thing if you want to take public transportation from Munich to Ludwig's castles (Fussen and Linderhof).

You can eat reasonbly well in Germany without spending a lot of money. Eat your big meals at lunch, eat at the stalls at the Christmas markets, or pick up a picnic lunch at the stores to eat on the train.

I would do this trip in a heartbeat.

We did not have to change trains going to Fussen from Munich on the Bayern Pass, or going to Salzburg. We did, however, miss the last direct train in the evening after dinner from Fussen to Munich, and made a one-hour stop in a charming little town. Just get a current schedule at the depot, so you know which train you want to take.

Hi, Tiller. You can pretty much eat as inexpensively or expensively as you want in Germany--just like the USA. The trick is to find the good, inexpensive places--just like in the USA. Hotels to tend to steer people to the higher end dining experiences. But we've found that if we really emphasize that we want the nice, local, inexpensive type place, we can get a few decent recommendations.

It's been a few years since we've been in Bamberg, but we had a nice lunch and a nice dinner right next to the bridge where the old city hall (Alte Rathaus) is located: The Rathausschenke is located at Obere Brucke 3, at the east end of the bridge. It's a cozy place with a bar and good, filling Franconian dishes, plus some other types of food, as well.

We stayed at the Hotel Brudermuhle at Schranne 1, about 5 minutes walk from the Rathausschenke. On the west bank of the river. It has a nice Franconian restaurant, too.

We usually enjoyed street stand/Wurst shack lunches like Bratwurst or Donor kabob or some such.

In Munich, we liked Liebighof im Lehel--not far from the Bavarian National Museum and the Schackgalerie. http://www.liebighof.de/

A couple of other good dining choices:
Between Nurnberg and Rothenburg, Burg Colmberg castle hotel has a nice restaurant. Had a very pleasant early dinner at Gasthof Schwarzer Adler in Ipsheim between Bamberg and Rothenburg.

Also had a very pleasant meal at Alpenhotel Meier on the outskirts of Hohenschwangau, on the road to Schwangau. Listened to the cowbells from the nearby farm while we dined.

Tiller;

Don't miss the smaller towns on the Alsatian Wine Route, such as Riquewihr.
