Help with Trieste day trip

Three of us are leaving next week for Europe. After spending time in the Parma/Modena area, we will be driving to Piran, Slovenia, with a stop in Trieste.
With only a few hours for Trieste, we are looking for guidance on parking the car, finding an interesting place for lunch, and doing a bit of sight-seeing. We've read about taking the tram, too. Thanks for your help!

don't miss the old town on a hill - tome the most romantic part of Trieste - recently rehabbed - lots of old wooden houses.

May be you are interested in
the castle of Miramare
the caves of Grotta Gigante
the fortress above the city
the austrian architecture in the center (as you certainly know, Trieste was the biggest harbour of Austria from 1815 until 1918).

and in the train station they also serve tiny cups of Austrian coffee along with of course Italian stuff - yes a very Germanic look and feel to Trieste (pronounced I believe "tree-estuh").
