I believe they post the actual train schedule 90 days out. To get an idea for the costs plug in a day 60ish days out in bahn.de and check the prices, they shouldn't change much.

Looks like savings fare for Munich to Salzburg is 19 euro but can be up to 33 euro if you buy the day of.

Salzburg to Frankfurt savings fares are 29-89 euros. Regular fares are 89-103 euros. These all came from October and should be around December fares when they are posted.

You can buy tickets 92 days in advance. Remember, if you look at schedules within 90 days you maybe looking at summer schedules which might be different from winter schedules. You'll need to wait until the winter schedules are out to plan further, but in your case these are fairly popular routes so nothing to worry about.

I am travelling by train from Dresden to Szczecin (through Berlin) and then back to Berlin in September. Will I have any trouble getting a ticket on the day of travel or if I buy tickets now on the website, can I use them for a different date and time?

jhrringel -you will absolutely have NO problem getting tickets on day of train -there are hourly trains or so and as no trains in Germany -or nearly none - require reservations you can always board the train - so put angst about that to rest. But if you just show up at the station you pay full price and this can be a whole lot more than booking the SPAR type online specials ofsay 39 euros or less regardless of distance. But they are sold in limited numbers and may well sell out weeks before the train (or may not)

So booking in advance at www.bahn.de -the German Railways web site can save a whole lot of money -but you do lose flexibility as those tickets are only good on specific trains and i believe cannot be refunded nor changed. If you buy a full fare ticket from the web site you can use it on any train that is the same fare category - some trains cost more so you could not use a cheaper ticket (for a slower train) on the faster train without paying the difference in fares - these are clearly shown on bahn.de

If paying full fare IMO there is no reason to buy ahead - just buy both tickets in Dresden (including return ticket to Berlin)

Now if wanting flexibility then the German Railpass can pay off with just a few trips and it provides fully flexible travel - hop on virtually any train anytime - no going to ticket windows, etc. (a handful of trains you will not encounter do require reservations but 99% do not) - like in Venezia 123's example - full fare for his/her travel could well be 136 euros (using figures from lindy) - that one train trip could be nearly as much as a 3-day in one month German Pass - especially if the OP were doing any other train trips the pass could pay off quickly IF flexibility is desired. If not then do the SPAR type online discounts.

For loads on German train travel and passes and things like Lander Cards (regional passes) i always spotlight these Wunderbar sites - www.seat61.com (good tips on online discounts); www.budgeteuropetravel.com (for folks not familiar with www.bahn.de site then use the link on this home page as it takes you to the English language schedule and fare page - and this home page gives several useful tips on fully using the really great bahn.de site that may not be apparent at first encounter -like giving you the platform numbers for your trains and even which bus or tram to take to the train station from your accommmodation, etc.); and www.ricksteves.com
