Help with rental cars in Italy

Are these "studies" made of US drivers, or European drivers? If they studied US drivers, then other "things" might influence the results - inexperience with sticks, higher percent of sticks are on high-performance (low miles/gal) cars, etc.
Who did the study - US automakers?????
Agree that diesel makes the air noxious - when we drive on freeways in Europe, I frequently start caughing & we have to get off the road for awhile. Doesn't happen to me in the US (we live in the SF Bay Area).

We also rented from Hertz in Italy. Usually I don't use them in the US because they are more expensive. We rented here for Italy, there was a special pre-pay deal that not only covered ALL insurance but also gave us more assurance that we would get the car we wanted.
