I agree with kja - I wouldn't want to depend on everything going perfectly on the day you're flying out of Rome. If you can't fly out of Naples instead of Rome, I'd revise the schedule to train from Naples to Rome the day before your flight out of Rome. Even if that means dropping a day/night from another city.

And even when you think it's going perfectly: BA changed our flight time to a much earlier flight out of Rome, so we have decided to spend our last night at the Rome airport, train into Rome for a last supper and avoid the travel anxiety you are facing above. We have done the former on several trips, and now my DH knows that getting up before dawn to drive to an airport is not our best way to travel. This time we lay the blame to schedule change.

kja - you are so smart! We will fly in to and out of Rome in October. Until now had planned on starting with 4 nights in Rome on arrival, 9 nights Amalfi Coast, then back to Rome for 1 night before flight home. Your way - leave doing Rome til last - is much safer and 1 less hotel change. Yeah!
The only con is that Rome is the most intense part of the trip and hope we're not too pooped out by then to fully enjoy.

Same story here also. I was planning our trip to Rome and then the AC and how to catch our flight back home from Rome. My wife finally suggested going to the AC then Rome to make our flights easier. I hadn't even thought of it before her suggestion.

I have travelled back from Capri to Rome for a flight twice with no problems -the hydrofoils (in the summer, at least - when are you going ?) & trains are very reliable. I would not want to do Rome last as it is so tiring.

Steve - thanks for the link for the ferries from Capri to Naples - very helpful

kja - I am definitely considering your suggestion. My initial thought in planning the trip was to end with the beauty and relaxation af Capri and AC. But, I definitely understand that things don't always go the way you plan. (Although somehow I always find my self running through the airport no matter what I do)

Caroline - I am going in May, so i don't know how the ferries/trains will be at that time. What time were your flights from Rome and when did you leave Capri in the morning?

I know many people don't like to relocate any more often than absolutely necessary, but if you are willing to add one more change of hotel to your visit and you want to visit Rome earlier in your schedule, so that you can spend the later part of your vacation in more relaxing locations, then you might consider adjusting your plans to leave just one last night in Rome before your flight. You could, for example, plan to get there mid-afternoon or later, and plan on spending the rest of that day and evening in relatively quiet activities in Rome - like walking around (and then dining in) Trastevere or strolling and cafe-sitting in Old Rome. . . .

We decided to take your advice kja and go to Sorrento/Capri and then Rome. DH decided that he may be "arted out" after Venice and Florence and he may need a break before Rome. Either way, I am just happy to be going. Just looking at the hotel websites makes me want to be there right now.

Thanks for everyones help with this.

I can't remember the exact times now but I think my flight was late afternoon.

But I see you have now definitely decided on Rome last anyway.

Like I said, it wouldn't be my choice, but each to his own. I try to go somewhere to relax at the start & end of my holidays & do the tiring part in the middle.
