My apology because I know there are many posts on Lisbon lodging... and I have searched web sites galore but... I am confused as to which area to stay for a more 'quaint' area - I see that Baixa is supposedly a very busy area but Bairro Alto and Alfama have more character. Is Lisbon 'walkable' or is the location extremely important to see the city ? We would like to stay in an area that is convenient to the bars/restaurants for the evenings. Many thanks !

Baixa is nightlife area i believe and a pleasant area to stay in. Alfama is high on a hill and the oldest part of town - not bad walk but the famous old trams serving the area will take you right down to the main commercial town.

All three areas will be fine - and to me at least, all are short walks from most things.

Thanks for the info ! Did you find a hotel that you would recommend ? This is a last minute trip - I am usually MUCH better at planning and do so far in advance. I leave Friday Ouch ! Thanks again for the info.

Just to clarify what PalenqueBob stated about the "Lisbon" thread. Yes, while Matt from England started the thread, it is both Matt and LOBO MAU who offer many, many suggestions and lots of advice. They also are both responsible for the very successful and extremely fun "Lisbon Dining Club". Now that shouldn't be missed!

The success of "The Lisbon Dining Club" was made by the contributions of the nearly 40 outstanding friends who had the kindness of sharing with us a brief moment of their lives, and Namaka, Robert and their children are among those we remember with more saudades.

I recomend the Residencial Florescente (www.residencialflorescente.com/). Extremely well located and quite nice. It was 70€ double last summer. We walked everywhere (just about) from there.

I also think you should do whatever you can to attend a Lisbon Dining Club - or at least have a drink with Lobo (and/or Matt).

To Lobo_Mau: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the recommendation for the Chiado Regency. That was a fabulous hotel, great location, the most fantastic room with a view of St Jorges Castle - we sat outside on the terrace with a glass of wine and enjoyed the view of the castle at night. The staff was incredible - even helped us with a problem with the taxi driver wanting us to pay 30 EURO for a meter showing 6 EURO ! Thanks again ! Wonderful place ! It is in the top of my list of places to visit again in the near future.
