help with itinerary....please
We are going to be touring the peloponnese by car for 12 days from 20th August. we are planning to use campsites for accomodation, but not neccesarily every night - proper facilities might be nice occasionally! We are spending the first night in a hotel at Cape Sounion, but after that we are unsure. The problem we have is that there are so many places we want to visit, but we also do not want to spend the entire time travelling around. Places we would like to visit, in no particular order are:
meteora, delphi, epidavros, glythio, monemvassia, gerolimenas and possibly a few days on Kythera or Elafonisos. This has already been scaled down!
My questions are:
Which would be the best route to take?
Are we trying to fit in too much?
Are we missing out any must see sights?
As we are planning on camping is it still necessary to pre book at campsites?
This is a great site but since reading your posts I have added a few more places to my itinerary!

I see you have scaled back.
I have not been to Delphi or Meteora so someone else will have to provide their thoughts on that part of the trip.
We have recently completed the southern Peloponnese portion of your trip.
First of all we had 7 days. We spent the first two nights in Naphlion and used it as a base to travel to Epidavaros, Tyrins, Ancient Nemea ( which was a sister city to Olympia and also the sight of ancient games) Argos and Mycene.
Nafplion itself is a wonderful visit with neoclasical archetecture and three intact Venetian Fortresses.
We then travelled through the mountains to Tripoli and south to Sparti. That trip including lots of stops took us 5 hours. Unfortunately we arrived at Mystras just at closing at 3 and had to catch it on the way back. Mystras eventually took us 4 hours to wander through and we really didn't do justice to the lower part of the town.
After leaving Mystras we drove to Monemevasia. That took 3 hours ( partly due to a navigational error that took us through several quaint villages) Monemvasia is an incredible visit. It is a fortress city which will take about 4 hours to tour. We were fortunate to get a hotel within the city walls and loved it so much we spent two nights there. There is something almost unreal about being able to stay in the city. It was a highlight of our trip.
We then drove from Monemvasia west into the Mani. We drove to Gythio and then on to Aeropoli for the night. Driving time was about 6 hours however we spent 20 minutes in an intersection in a small town talking to a local who thought we were lost( he was mostly correct) and spent an hour at a taverna chatting with a couple we had met the night before in Monemvasia.
The next morning we set out early from Aeropoli, spent an hour at Diros Caves and then into the Mani. We mostly just drove with a few stops for views and an hour at Vathey. This village of tower houses is mostly abandoned now and we spend a long time just scrambling around the ruins.
From there we passed Gerolimenas and headed back up the coast and through the maountains back to Gytheo. That trip took us close to 12 hours.
From Gytheo The next day we headed back to Sparti for Mystras and spent the night in Naphlio before heading to Ancient Corinth for an hour stop before heading to Athens airport to drop off the car.
I would say that on average we spent about 6 hours a day in the car, but that left us enough time to visit and explore wherever we chose to.
I have just posted our pictures on webshots. They are under separate albums one for Naphlion, one for Mani and one for Mystras.
To view them go to http://www.webshots.com">www.webshots.com see the community page and the find member spot. put in lollypeter100 and you will find our albums. I think they will help you decide where you want to spend time.

Nice pictures stanbr! We also looooooved the Mani. We stayed in Gerolimenas for 2 days and can't wait to go back to that region in the future. Also funny, we took the exact same picture of the slate church, at the same angle! Guess it inspires everybody!
