@PQ - don't know when you were last in Florence, but everything I have read lately says it is now wall-to-wall tourists.<
Florence was crowded like that the first time I went there during Roman days and the last time several years ago - but obviously you are in the dark about that as like Venice crowds gather in a few spots and much of the city is a more normal Italian city - suppose you have never been to Venice because of crowds?

Yes, restaurants are similar to U.S. so what works here should work there. Salads are always available and picnicking is nice in nice weather. Supermarkets are ubiquitous and often have prepared deli type food and fruits and veg to take out. Vegans are not unusual in Europe these days.
