I always take noise cancelling headphone with me, and I am willing to accommodate the space they take. On a trip to Mexico City, my cute little hotel well away from the main plaza was overrun by a loud annual celebration until 2 a.m. My headphones helped me sleep, and also tune out most but for the highest pitched crying babies.
on giving your mother money, I get what you mean about tacky, but I look at as a service - saving her the bother of changing money, or stopping in the airport or other spot for the best rate. Not everything can go on the credit card( to get the best prevailing rate). As a world traveler, she may want to stop in places off the beaten path where she'll need cash. I would be careful of gift cards, as some have transaction fees that eat away at the actual usable funds. It's nice of you to think and dream ahead for your mother's travel. Planning and anticipation are half the fun.
