Help urgently needed; Barcelona hotel decision

Dear Kind People Of Fodors,
I am in a semi-dilemna. I have a choice of 5 hotels for a trip to Barcelona next week, but can't decide on what one to pick. Whilst some have websites and info available on the internet, I can't find much on the others. They are all in the same price category; about 75 euros for a twin room, and in roughly the same position; near the ramblas.
The hotels:
Hotel California
Hotel Cuatro Naciones
*Hostal-Residencia Ramos
*Apartamentos Mur Mar
Hotel Principal

*I have hardly found any info for these.
I know Ramos from the Time Out guide and Mur-Mar from a random website I happened to stumble upon and a single post from this forum (but that particular post seemed to be written by someone associated with the hotel)

I know Principal and California are respected budget hotels, but both Ramos(because of the Time Out recommendation and slightly cheaper price) and especially Mur-Mar intrigue me. Mur Mar seems not only to have an equally good location as the rest, but also has a kitchen and living room. It is because of these potentially beneficial additional facilities that I am most dubious about the standard of the accommodation however. Can the apartment be of any real quality in terms of cleanliness/modernity etc if it includes these, and remains the same price as a similarly located hotel (that unlike Mur Mar is frequently mentioned in guides/ websites with reviews etc), with only two beds and a bathroom?
Any help, either by those who have had experience of any of these hotels (especially Mur-Mar) or by someone knows of them well, would be extremely appreciated.
With regards

Check Hotel Ingelterra. I think the rate was more like E150 but it will likely be less at this time of year. It is off the Placa Catalunya and very near but not on La Rambla (which I preferred, the Rambla is so touristy). Also near the subway and the student area near the University. Enjoy! Barcelona is great. Do not miss Gaudi's masterpieces: Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, Parc Guell, etc.

Thanks for your response but I've already tried Inglaterra and they are charging 95euros, which is out of my budget. I know what you mean about the Ramblas, but its central and fun in a tacky kind of way. Also, I don't really want to contact any more hotels (I've already tried loads; most are either full or too expensive)I'm so indecisive, so the last thing I need is more choice. If anyone knows of any that are less known (I've tried all the popular ones; Jardi, Peninsular, Internacional etc) that might still have vacancies for next Wednesday, it may be worth a try though.

Jakiano -

Rather than posting 3 or more additional identical threads, why not "top" your original one in hopes of obtaining further responses?

I'm headed to BCN for the first time next month, so can't give you any opinions from personal experience. Have you already searched for feedback on each of these properties on tripadvisor.com?

I prefer small places with some warmth and potential charm, so the Mur Mar wouldn't be my choice - the exterior looks like an office building to me. Of your choices, I'd probably go with the California.

The feedback I found here led me to the Eixample (yes, there are budget choices there - all these are under 65E double/night) I'm staying at Hostal Central: http://www.hostalcentralbarcelona.com/ Just opened in 2002, so no writeups or feedback that I could find, but it looks awfully nice for the price and is obviously all fresh and new.

Other choices I considered included Hostal Oliva: http://www.lasguias.com/hostaloliva/ Listed in TimeOut, Let's Go and Concierge.com. Great location, but rooms don't look quite as nice.

Hostal D'Uxelles: http://www.barcelona-on-line.es/loca.../eng/index.asp Looks good, but on a busier street.

Hostal Windsor, Hostal Eden and the Hotel Paseo de Gracia are other budget choices in the area that are listed in my Cadogan guide and TimeOut.

Sorry about th additional posts,I was not aware of this "topping" idea. I'm a fodor virgin. I agree about Mur Mar looking ugly, but the promise of a bigger room has the potential to outweigh this problem. I have looked on Tripadvisor.com and there is no info on Mur-Mar. That's why I'm sceptical. About the Eixample district; having been to Barcelona before and visiting this area, I know that it is both cleaner and cheaper than the Barri Gotic etc, but as I am only there for a few nights this time, I wanted to be based in the centre.
Thanks for our help anyway though Lesli
