Help Translating Menus!

I had a successful trip to Switzerland last fall, and the only real difficulty my husband and I encountered was trying to decipher all the items on menus at restaurants. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? Is there some sort of translator for food items? Thanks for the input!

Phrase books and even many guidebooks have sections on menu items. However, never hesitate to ask your waiter.
good luck
Many guide books state that the best restaurants have menus in english. These mneus are generally posted outside the restaurant. Just returned from Rome and it worked well for us.

I agree with Mike, however, beware that when you ask for a menu in English, they may give you a 'tourist' menu. This happened to us in Munich, where the tourist menu contained items that the restaurant figured tourists would like. I like to try the local fare, not what someone thinks Americans will like. The staff is usually very helpful. In Paris we drew pictures of different animals with the staff to find out what things on the menu were - alot of laughs for all!!!! I also found that Italy was the easiest place to read a menu as its all the same as any Italian restaurant here.
