Help - Pompeii vs. Capri vist!
Hello - I am going on a Mediterranean Silversea cruise May 29th-June 5th (anyone taken this cruise w/feedback would be appreciated!). We stop for 1 day in Sorrento and I am torn between visiting Pompeii and Capri. I want to see both, the ship has a shore a excursion to Pompeii which is attractive (everything already covered i.e. transportation etc.) BUT I have heard Capri is amazing too - we would take the ferry for the day. I know this is a tough choice which is I am asking for help!!! Thanks for your responses.

liltoni, I love Capri BUT with just a day trip I would chose Pompeii. Not something you can see anywhere else.
Capri is beautiful but IMHO it cannot be appreciated with the daytrippers. I would try to do Capri when you can stay for a few nights.
What ever you decide I wish you a wonderful journey. Your cruise sounds fabulous and relaxing to boot.

I have seen both and perhaps since I was a history major, I would vote for Pompeii. Capri is beautiful, but lots of places are beautiful. Pompeii is quite unique. Very few places are similar to Pompeii and, as far as I know, none are as large.

I've also been to both and I have to say that the two don't compare. It's a totally different experience.
Unless you get to Capri VERY early, it is going to be a zoo. I got there at 8:45am and it was already crowded. I enjoyed it but because I was a day tripper I don't think I got the real experience of Capri.
So I'd have to say I also give my vote to Pompeii. It's something you can't see anywhere else. And let me tell you, I am an island person, I love just about any island and Capri was beautiful, but Pompeii is history and hopefully you will have plenty of time there to really explore.

Everyone replying above is correct IMO. A choice between an ancient civilization and a beautiful island. If you choose Pompeii, do it right. Join a guided tour, or at least rent audio tape guides, and take your time. Even rent a DVD to refresh yourself on the history.
If you choose Capri, you won't be able to do everything, but do plan a nice lunch and time for shopping (if that's your thing) in Capritown and Anacapri.
My opinion is that you will want to visit Pompeii at least once in your lifetime, and you'll need to visit Capri at least 2-3 days to to appreciate it all.
