help planing a few days in Sardinia in April 2026
My husband and I will be joining a Backroads group in Olbia at the end of April. We will arrive from Boston after 2 flights with 3 nights on our own. The group will be mostly covering the Costa Smeralda, so I wanted us to explore some of what we won't visit without going too far. We will rent a car from Olbia airport and return it there, but was thinking of driving to Alghero to spend the 3 nights. We are active 70 yo, but I don't want to overbook our activities since we are post transatlantic travel and pre-active trip. I was thinking:
boat excursion and tour Grotta di Netuno
drive to visit Capo Caccia
go to Bosa or Stintino for a day excursion
Are the distances do-able? Are these the best activities for the area? Is Alghero the best home base, and is it close enough to Olbia to be reasonable after our flights? any hotels to recommend in the area? Any other recommendations or tips from travelers who know the area?
Thanks for your help!

I would never drive after a transatlantic flight.
You can reach Alghero by train too (change at Sassari) .
BTW: Algnero has an airport with direct flights to Rome, Milan, London, Paris, Barcelona. etc.
In the case you should bve interested in History, you could visit the museum at Sassari, the Nuragus at Torralba and some old Lligurian churches.....
In low season, I prefer Pelosa (Stintino) and Asinara Island to Bosa

I agree that hiring a car immediately after a long journey is not safe. We did a day trip to Bosa from Alghero and enjoyed it, though not a lot there from memory. We also stayed in Santa Teresa Gallura which I preferred to Alghero and did a wonderful day trip by ferry to Bonifacio in Corsica, about a 40 min trip, with amazing views.
