My family is staying for three nights at Locanda Rosati in Orvieta. We will then be driving to Venice for four nights. We did not realize that the driving time was as long as it appears to be,but we leave in two days and is too late to make changes. Can anyone tell me how long this drive is. Where would be an interesting stopoff? We have two teenagers who are not thrilled about long periods in the car.

Also what is interesting Locanda Rosati that would not require long periods in the car. Thank you in advance

Cars don't do much good in Venice--can you drop it off in Orvieto and take the train? Trains are much more fun, anyway!

Nancy,Go to viamichelin.com for a full routing and time. It is all autostrada and I would guess about 5.5 hours. Just have lunch at the Autogrill on the highway.

From Orvieto, do not miss Civita and perhaps Pitigliano. We stayed at LR for 3 nites last year.

Bob, on the map I see Civita Castellana. Is that the place you always refer to as Civita?

No,it is Civita di Bagnoregno only about 12 miles SW of Orvieto, and not to be missed.

Todi and Montefiascone are both pretty hilltowns nearby worth half-day visits. As for the big drive, I second the use of www.viamichelin.com (and a good roadmap for the actual drive), but make sure to spell your starting point Orvieto and not the Orvieta you used in your question. You drive right by Montepulciano (another great hilltown), Arezzo (and again - great hilltown), Florence (too time-consuming to drive in and out if you want to make it to Venice in one day), Bologna (great stop for lunch at one of the best food cities in all of Italy. Don't miss the bolognese sauce or the parma ham), and Padua (at this point, just press on to Venice). I think that you could easily do the trip in 4 hours so there is plenty of extra time for one or more of the sidetrips I just mentioned. Have a great trip!
