I have never needed a PIN to use a credit card in Europe. Maybe the OP's son pressed the debit card button. I've done that but then was successful with the other button. Once again, cash always works.

<< Sounds like these chip/pin European countries are backwards to me--another PIN to remember. Bummer. That's a real step backwards--it's a lot easier to scribble one's signature. >>
It's also a lot easier for SOMEONE ELSE to scribble one's signature

That happened to me in Barcelona with my Visa, so I switched to my American debit card (which I knew the PIN for) and got the tix. However, a few months later I needed another pass and that time I went to the window and they carried out the transaction looking at my ID and the credit card. so, if he is there right now and needs the pass, he should be able to do that.

For us, the Paris Metro wouldn't take my American issued credit card. It was indeed an issue of a chip in the card itself. It will work if the attendant can swipe it through and you sign it.
Next trip I'll ask my bank about it.
We have our main checking through BankAmerica and they have reciprocal agreements with DeustcheBank, BNP Paribas, Barclays and others. So traveling to Great Britain, Germany, France and even Italy, we were able to withdraw cash from an ATM w/ no fees.
