Help me locate town in former Prussia

Barth-Vogelsang, Prussia -

My father-in-law was a navigator with the USAAF during World War II, and was shot down over the Czech/Austrian border (Dolni Dvoriste/Freistadt). He was taken to the Stalag Luft 1 P.O.W. camp in Barth-Vogelsang, Prussia, where he remained until he was liberated by the Russian army.

Can anyone help me find this town? I checked on viamichelin.com, and the search led me to two Barth's and seven Vogelsang's. I'm not even sure if I should be looking in Germany. HELP! I need a geography lesson. Peace.

Robyn

Robyn, if you poke around on some genealogy websites you may find some info of use. People researching their roots in Europe need to know the names of towns prior to WWII and what the town is called now if it changed.

You may also find the info by looking for a "gazetteer."

A google search for POW camps show the location to be 54N, 12W, which puts it near Rostock in northern Germany, by the Baltic Sea. There's a town called Barth very close to the NE, which I think should be the location of that camp.

artstuff- there is some confusion in the POW sites mentioned as to the location of Luft 1 - some say Prussia while some locate it in Pomerania. If Pomerania, then rkkwan is correct and viamichelin will pinpoint the site in "mecklenburg-vorpommern". There is also a Vogelsang in M-VP, but quite a distance from Barth and very close to the Polish border. Hope this helps.

Thank you, everyone, for your quick responses.

According to the POW records that I have located for my father-in-law, the camp was located in Barth-Vogelsang, in Prussia, at 54-12, so I will assume it is located near the Baltic Sea, as rkkwan indicated.

Thank you again for the information. Peace.
