See if they can send it by airmail rather than courier, which is obviously much more expensive. Maybe the problem is that they can't spare the manpower to go to the post office. That's why they suggested the courier option.
A similar thing happened to me in Rome. I bugged the hotel a few times. It's a small hotel. In the end, they sent it to a friend in London. I picked my sweater up subsequently (I forget how -- either I picked it up from her, or she gave it to another friend who came to the US, or she came to the US).
The hotel refused my offer of postage, but I taped a 10-euro bill to a thank-you card and mailed that to them. Postage within Europe was probably just around 5 euros.
I'd check with them to see if they can arrange for the sweater to be sent by regular airmail.

Why in the world are you going to Cincinnati, lincasanova I live 15 minutes from Hyde Park!!!! Your going to miss the art show there this weekend! This is going to work out. You are to kind.
This way we can even meet!
I'll let the hotel know that they can send it to you. You're free to contact them with your address. I'll call them also to let them know it's fine. My e-mail is [email protected] so we can stay in touch.
Thanks so very much.
Thanks hdm for your offer. We'll see if this other approach will work out instead!

I have been checking the Correos webpage (Spanish Post Office) and the cheapest way of sending it would be about 16 euros, if the sweeter does not exceed 1 kgs.
It is not true that Correos is so slow as Aduchamp1 suggests. My family have sent packages to our Brazilian family and they have received them in a relatively short time. I don't think that US Postal Service is going to be slower than Brazilian one...

I checked my records and could have sworn I kept the mailing slip of the package, but didn't. I thought it was DHL but can't swear to it. The bill came through on my credit card from the hotel, not the shipping company, and was 17 euro. They must have paid for it directly and then charged me. Actually, it probably would be irregular for someone to give a company someone else's credit card number to charge. So that sounds similar to the above quote for Spanish postal service. It took about 2-3 weeks and probably weighed only about a pound.

Thanks everyone for your help. Christina, your solution sounds like it worked out wonderfully.
My situation is working out, thanks so very much to Lincasanova. I found out yesterday that we actually left 3 sweaters behind in that closet. My husbands 2 sweaters were also hung up and I didn't even realize it.
The hotel is sending them COD to lincasavona in Valencia. The shipping charges are higher than your shipping to the U.S. There are three though!
Lincasavona will be arriving in Cincinnati, very, very close to my home so I'll pick them up from her and pay the COD.
It's wonderful how nice people can be on this board, you're such a wonderful group. I look forward to meeting her soon!

I just stumbled on this out of curiosity and have nothing to add, but I had to comment on how wonderfully thoughtful so many of the fodorites are. Both hdm and lincasanova are good examples. Tickles the cockles of my heart . . .

So glad this worked out for you. Its always so wonderful to hear about examples of people helping out others. I think I was especially touched as a Cinti girl myself (unfortunately I don't live there anymore). There are nice people the world over, but I've always had an affinity for the people from "home".

update. both my cases made it to sfo.
so, now after a few days of re-visiting old friends and colleagues, i hope they make it again to cvg!
i can't wait to meet images2.
i am missing GTG's everywhere! SFO , and chicago by ONE DAY!! .. and no one has ever come to one in valencia.. so..
hope this spurs some more left sweaters or somehow some type of reunion in the future!

Indeed a heartwarming story - and a testament to the power of the forums! Still can't believe the postage amounts you were quoted, Images2. We just bought 5 heavy art books from Berlin (and one light one!), and the shop charged us 30euros for shipping - it was a huge box and arrived in 3 weeks.
