Help in Umbria

My husband and I are travelling to Italy in June. We will be staying two days in Umbria (I am sure not enough time!). Has anyone stayed in the town of Spello? Where did you stay? Or is there another town that might be better as a base for touring Umbria? Thank you

Cathy

Cathy,

My husband and I stayed in Umbria a couple of years ago. We stayed at Le Tre Vaselle in Torgiano, but if I had to do it over, I would stay in Spello. There are two hotels there--my preference would be La Bastiglia. It was recommended to us by the owner of the local enoteca and was one of the best meals of our trip (we didn't see the rooms, but the restaurant is first class). If you like wine and wine tasting, make sure to visit Enoteca Propezio in Spello. It's owned by two brothers, Carlo and Roberto, and they lay out quite a spread for their degustation. I'd recommend taking this instead of lunch!

Have a great trip!

Spello is great for touring central Umbria but you're right, 2 days won't be enough to see all of the region. From Spello, you can easily get to Trevi, Assisi, Perugia, Bevagna and Montefalco. If you had more time, you can still use Spello as a central base and see Gubbio, Citta del Castello, Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto and Norcia.

Hi Cathy,

Spello is a lovely city and very centrally located. For a splurge, we stayed at Hotel Palazzo Bocci. Large rooms, great service, central location, good views. Be warned that, like Assisi, it is a hill town and be prepared for some up and down between places within the city. Not too bad, but did want to mention it if there are any health issues.

I stayed at La Bastiglia in 03', a lovely restored millhouse with beautiful terrace views of olive groves and Mt. Subasio. A very good place to stay, the food being even better.
