Heidelberg Castle

If I arrive in Heidelberg via train from Frankfurt, am I anywhere near the castle? If not, how do I go about getting from the train station to the castle?

Gratefully,

Carla C

Heidelberg is not a large city. I am not sure where the train station is, since I have only driven there. The castle is on the hill in the very center of town. I can't imagine it would be too far from the train station and a taxi if needed should not be too expensive.

You are not particularly close to the castle when you disembark at the train station, but neither are you all that far (Heidelberg is not all that large a place).

Bus service in Heidelberg is quite reliable, and I'd suggest that option if you're short on funds. Or you could take the easy way out and just take a taxi (still not very expensive).

Are you staying overnight in Heidelberg? If so you'll want to drop your bag at the hotel first in any case. If you want to share the name of the hotel I might be able to recommend a more specific plan.

Hi Carla,

Upon exiting the train station in Heidelberg, almost straight ahead, but a little to your left, you will see the bus/tram stop.

We took the tram to Bismarckplatz (sp?). Don't remember the tram# but it clearly stated Bismarckplatz. Bismacrkplatz is a pedestrian zone. Walk down Bismarckplatz past the stores, restaurants, etc to the square (sorry don't know the name of the square). The funicular up to the castle is off to the right in that general area or you can walk up.

I don't know how close a taxi would get you to the castle.

We took a taxi from the train station. It took about 5 to 10 minutes and we were dropped off right at the entrance.

US

I was in Heidelberg 2 years ago.

I went to the Castle by taxi. I'd like to say that it was 10 minutes and the cost was about 25 DM's.

It can be walked, but it would be quite a hike.

Have a good time

I believe Lufthansa runs a bus from the airport to a Heidelberg hotel, but I don't know which one, and I don't know how close the hotel is to the castle. Perhaps someone could enlighten us?

Jim

Bus from terminal 1, 45 minutes past the hour (6.45 to 19.45, plus 21 and 22.15). Journey time 75 minutes to Crowne Plaza Hotel, not far from Altstadt. Ticket (19 euros single, 35 return) from Lufthansa, travel agencies or from the bus driver. www.crowneplaza-heidelberg.de.
Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof (main station) is a mile from Altstadt, two miles from the castle. Take a local train (RB for RegionalBahn) four minutes to Karlstor Bahnhof.

If you travel from Frankfurt airport, take a fast train to Mannheim, change for a RB to Heidelberg Karlstor (18 euros by IC/EC, 22 euros by ICE).
www.bahn.de.
