heathrow to gatwick

I am considering a flight between Bordeaux and Stuttgart that requires a stop and change of airports in London. Has anyone done that lately? Who transfers my luggage? How do I get between airports? What does CheapOAir and/or British Airways provide for as far as service is concerned?

Thanks for your help.

We have always avoided this transfer but there is a bus that is very easy to catch that goes from Heathrow to Gatwick. Look on the Heathrow or Gatwick web sites.

You collect your luggage, you put it on the National Express coach between airports, you collect it at the other end.

You will get NO HELP from either airline AND you will pay for the transfer.

Now the big questions - how long do you have to do the transfer, when are you flying and who are the airlines?

Hundreds of people do this transfer every day - but as alanRow says - you need to tell us more like when and how long between flights? Also, one ticket or two?

"Who transfers my luggage?"

oh - we were posting at the same time.

by 4+ hours do you mean 4 hours 5 mins, or more like 4 hours 55 mins?

WHEN are you flying.

4+ hours could mean anything from "it's doable but don't saunter at any stage" to "you've got to be joking - there's no way you are going to make that connection"

I think that we will travel by train instead. When my husband and I have to change trains, are we responsible for our luggage between trains?

Thanks for your help.

You are responsible for the transfer of your luggage between trains

And even IF they did transfer your luggage (which they wouldn't) -- there is no train from Heathrow to Gatwick

I thought they meant between Bordeaux and Stuttgart.

You can get most of the way between Heathrow and Gatwick - HEX or HEC to Paddington, Tube to Victoria, GEX or Southern Trains to Gatwick

Oh, probably should have explained - there are roundabout routes where you could take a combination of trains/buses or trains/taxis or trains and the tube - but none would get you there faster than the airport bus. And on ALL of those options you would have to handle your own bags.

The only option where you wouldn't is to hire a car/driver - but that will be very expensive.

Just how much luggage do you have anyway that taking a direct bus it too much hassle?

OH - do you mean a train from Bordeaux to Stuttgart?? Sorry. yes you definitely will have to schlepp your bags on/off the trains and store them at the end of the car or in the overhead racks . . . .

I'm sorry that I haven't been clear. I guess I thought that others have ESP!!
Let me start over and give more info.

My husband (who is disabled because of a back injury) and I will be traveling from Belves France to Reutlingen Germany. He can walk short distances with a cane; therefore, moving luggage is a concern. I don't care whether we travel by air or train. I do, however, care about the cost. The British Airway flight from Bordeaux to Stuttgart has a window of 4 hours, 10 minutes to get between airports (Gatwick to Heathrow).
The Gatwick website suggested that a 3 hour minimum layover is necessary.

Again, thanks for your help.

If your husband has mobilty problems, then I'd personally 1) pack light, and 2) probably take the train. Even w/ a car service the transfer LGW to LHR is just a bit too tight.

Is this a part of a longer itinerary? If so, how are you dealing w/ the bags elsewhere?

We are going to two weddings: one in France and one in Germany. I do plan on sending of our things ahead of time via FedEx, UPS, etc. to France, but this still leaves the problem of getting luggage to Germany.
We are planning on traveling light, but will be in Europe two weeks.

Then consider shipping home the things you won't need after France. And you can also ship things from Bordeaux to Germany.
