O.K. I have decided to take Sheila's suggestion, and use Perth as a hub. My maternal grandmother was born there, on George Street, in 1906. My question now is where should I look to find a suitable B&B or small hotel. (My name is William. I will be celebrating my 60th birthday while away!) Again, many many thanks.

can you give us a budget? I guess the Royal George might be a bit hefty?

Sheila: The Royal George is directly across the street from my grandmother's birthplace! Have you stayed at the hotel?

My budget for accommodation is about $75 USD/day. Do you think it might be worthwhile my contacting them to ask about a rate for an extended stay? -William

$75 = approx £45. The Royal George will run about twice that.

This nice B&B place runs £45-£65 single --but they might give a decent discount for a long booking. Worth asking anyway. http://kinnaird-guesthouse.co.uk/

I know you've opted for Perth -- and it would make a good base/hub. But your money might go a tad bit farther in a smaller town(s).

That's why I suggested it I haven't stayed there. I'm from Perth originally, but I've been away a long time. I have family there so I stay with them if I'm down. (Incidentally one of them has lovely affordable self catering on the edge of town if you have any interest). I have used it for a conference in the last 6 months. It was very tired but it's being done up. It used to be THE place to stay in Perth.

Their rack rate is £95/day but at that time of year you might well get a deal; ask them.

The Salutation is the other big town centre hotel. The County is getting a good name these days. The City Mills (I think it might be a Ramada now) is worth asking. These are all central

I HAVE stayed in the Parklands, and liked it- room overlooking the Inch required)

B&Bs are not my thing
