Having only ever been to London and wanting to take my teen sons, which three countries would you recommend?

If your boys are at all active and/or interested in history of the bloody kind, they would probably love to spend some time in the Dordogne. Take them to Castelnaud to learn how to sack a castle, take them canoeing down the Dordogne with the imposing Hundred Years War castles hanging over the cliffs above, take them rock climbing or horseback riding or bicycling the unutterably lovely small roads of the Périgord, take them into the prehistoric caves, take them to the incredible markets and to restaurants where they can stuff themselves with local delicacies for a pittance. They'll have the time of their lives and won't even know they are being force-fed history.

Then take them through the mountains past Toulouse to the Cathar region of France and let them bask a few days in the sun at Collioure - a short side trip into Spain from there would be enlightening and a change of pace.

I suppose you could do this beginning in London, too. Take the Eurostar to Paris and train down to Périgueux or Brive and begin your journey there.

London, Paris and Barcelona for very different cultures and exciting cities. Barcelona is near the water so it would be a variation.
Research some history before leaving for the trip, makes it so much more interesting. Research the sites in those cities and let them choose.

I am topping this for some more suggestions. I am going to share these results with my boys and have them pick from here. Oh...I have a friend who went to an ice cave somewhere. Sorry to be so vague, but I can't remember where she was. Which countries have ice caves. (remember, I've never been to Europe with the exception of London!)
