Have you bought a return ticket on Eurostar and only used it for one way?
Someone I know told me it is illegal to buy a return ticket on the Eurostar train and only use it for one-way travel. He said the train company can check passenger records and has every right to charge my credit card the difference in cost for the higher one-way fare if I don't complete the journey.

Does this blow-hard know what he's talking about? Or is he just being mean and trying to scare me?

I am speculating with NO relevant personal experience with this specific issue, but I bet it isn't true. And besides - - isn't one solution to simply pay cash?

I think if this practice occurred with any regularity, the word would get out, and you would have heard similar rumors of everyone paying cash for return tickets.

The same rumor for the airlines has existed for a long time. I just don't see how they can account for simple inability to make it to the station/airport on time - - and traveling at another time - - or to another place - - perhaps unforeseeably.

Best wishes,

Rex
How much is the savings for a round-trip ticket? Each way on the Rome/Florence 1st class says 82,000. I didn't see any option for round-trip. Is this something that can only be bought when you get there, or can you do it on-line?

I appreciate any info you can give me...

Within the UK we buy return tickets all the time and discard the return portion, there is nothing illegal about it and often the railway ticket clerk suggests you do this. Usually, it's a cheaper way to travel. I use same ploy on the London-Manchester flight as again there's a saving. I truly can't see that the Eurostar will be any different.

two years ago myself and a freind bought round trip between london and paris because it was cheaper than one way. when we checked out of the hotel we gave the return chits to the clerk who said he or his friends could use them. think we paid cash. no harm no foul.
